It's the Weekly What? for Friday, September 14th.
Have you ever noticed how most of the dates on the calendar end in "th"?
So the week started off with a bang, technical issues beyond our control stranding us without e-mail for most of the day. Pretty much shut us down. (Jeez, we had to use phones! With cords!! And actually talk to people!!! With our voices!!!!) Thank goodness for Minesweeper! We are sooo boss on that now. We no longer trust e-mail as our sole method of communication and have put in place a redundancy policy of communication redundancy. All e-mails will be followed up with voice calls and faxes. As usual there's lots more fun stuff over on our Facebook page (like tips for fixing your HTML e-mails, how to make a little storage box out of a milk jug, infographics, DIY clutch purses, and more!). So head on over and check it out and leave us an answer to this week's question: "What's the best (or worst) customer service experience you've ever had?"
Communication isn't a touchy feel-y waste of time...
It's a vital business function. When GoDaddy experienced a major outage on Monday (It was a hacker! No, a power cord! No, space aliens!) they left their customers hanging for most of the day with nothing better than generic assurances that they were working on it. GoDaddy's competitors, however, were more than happy to jump into the middle of the customer discussion with special offers and discounts to entice those upset customers away from the GoDaddy fold. Talking to your customers in times of trouble isn't a waste of time or resources. Read more... >>
That's a lot of lights...
Kind of like Nutella, bacon, and Mod Podge, there's nothing that can't be improved with the application of little colored lights. At last January's Light Festival, the folks in Ghent, Belgium covered a cathedral with 55,000 LED lights. Wow. Oh, and we don't mean to suggest that Nutella, bacon, AND Mod Podge all together are a winning combination. It's just that each one of those things seems to improve or make awesome whatever they're applied to. Got it? So, we're still talking about lights, right? >>
Watching me watching you...
Check out the camera van. It's a van of cameras! Photographer and artist Harrod Blank covered his van with bazillions of old cameras. He's also got a "hidden" camera or two that captures the reactions of passers by, on-lookers, and gawkers. Be sure to click through to his site to see photos he's snapped of folks around the world gaping at his rolling wonderment. Say cheese! >>

It's a web design twofer!
First, here's a collection of, dare we say, essential WordPress plugins. Certainly all the bases are covered here. Oh, and they're FREE! Can't beat that with a stick, eh? And b.) Here's a list of the biggest mistakes in web design. You know, cats-and-dogs-living-together kind of BIG MISTAKE.
How-To: Create your own snappy looking letterhead in Word!
We'd say this was a "quick and easy" tutorial for creating your own letterhead in Microsoft Word, but that might be overstating it a bit. How about "Not terribly long and fairly tolerable" tutorial? Well, either way it's not too difficult, but you WILL have a tremendous sense of accomplishment when you're done! With great power comes great responsibility >>
Awesome DIY photo tiles
Remember Mod Podge (we were just talking about it further up the page)? Here's another example of its awesomeness: make 'em yourself photo (or picture) tiles! This is a pretty neat idea and the result is fantastic! Pretty inexpensive, too, because we're all about cheap here! (Except for the bananas: only shade-grown, small batch, organic, artisanal 'nanners are good enough for the Writing Room Monkeys.) Check 'em out! (Tiles, not bananas.) >>
Finally, we'll leave you with this kitten chorus line!
Behold this (mostly) coordinated group of kittens being all fuzzy and cute. And coordinated. Except for that one little guy in the white. So...um...honestly we can't come up with much else to say. Kittens! Cute! Fuzzy-wuzzy! Go watch! Happy Friday! >>
The Weekly What? is more fun when you share! It's easy, just click the "Forward email" link below... keep going... a little farther down... there it is! Send this newsletter to a friend! Don't worry, we won't hit them up for money.
