It's the Weekly What? for Friday, September 7th.

Another mixed bag from a bunch of mixed nuts...

We've got a lot of fun stuff again this week: Our usual smorgasbord of Internets Time Wasting! But we've also included a few somewhat useful links so you can always try to claim the time reading this newsletter as a business expense. Let us know how that goes, mmmkay? Anyway, once you're done wasting your time here, why don't you waste a bit more time over on our Facebook page? Don't bother with your own Facebook home page (or "Timeline" or whatever they want to call it this week), go right to where all the good stuff gathered in one place! While you're there, leave us an answer to this week's question: "What's the worst movie (original or sequel) you've ever seen?"

The NASA graphic standards, circa 1976

Here's a fun peek at the rather sizable graphic standards manual for the NASA logo redesign way back 1976. You know, the futuristic looking one when it seemed that the Space Shuttle was just the beginning of something huge. Unfortunately NASA's back to using the "insignia" that has its origins in the original 1959 seal design. Apparently there was much made of the crossbars that were "missing" in the 1976 redesign. "I just don't feel we are getting our money's worth!" >>

What's with all the social media? When should you tweet and when should you Facebook? What about pinning all the things?

If you're spending most of your waking hours on Facebook, do you really need to mess with Twitter? How about LinkedIn? It's like MySpace, but for professionals? ("Professional" what??) Never mind Pinterest and Instagram... those are both photos, right? Okay, okay. settle down. Here's a simple infographic that quickly distinguishes between the various social media. Honestly, what can't bacon do?? >>

PSA: Troma Entertainment posts 150 classic films to YouTube.

Yeah, classics: you know, like "Toxic Avenger" and "Class of Nuke 'Em High." You couldn't have made it through the '80's without rubbing elbows with ol' Toxie! Plus you can also watch some real gems, including what is arguably the first ever zombie movie! 1932's "The White Zombie" featuring everyone's favorite monster actor, Bela Lugosi! "Mops? Must be a political statement." >>

Another justification for buying an iPad...

We all know that within days of buying an iPad, you'd fill it up with games and eBooks and fart noise apps. But how do you overcome that initial hurdle of justifying the purchase of an iPad? You can't tell your boss or significant other that you need an iPad to make hilarious fart noises during meetings. You need some sort of businessy reason for getting one. Well, you can't get much more serious-about-work than Excel spreadsheets, but a major roadblock is that Microsoft has yet to produce Office apps for the iPad. Here's a great article that explains your options for viewing and editing (and even creating!) Excel spreadsheets on an iPad. Alright! Let's go shopping! >>

How-To: Create awesome little lanterns out of soda cans!

We're kind of suckers for cute little lanterns and these are among some of the coolest little DIY lanterns that we've seen! We think it's probably because of the re-use/recycling/upcycling factor. The thin material of soda cans makes this a really easy, no-sweat project (just watch out for sharp edges!!) and the already colorful designs on the cans makes them perfect material for jazzing up your surroundings. Oh, and don't forget: careful with the candles! Hot and burny! Shiny! >>

Designer Corner!

We can't pretend like designers don't exist so we thought we better throw together a little something to ward off the icy silences and arched eyebrows. Here's a nice selection of useful web design tools: a kerning tool, CSS gradient and button generators, and more! For you print designers, how many of you have had to resize a job after completing it? Yeah, tell us about it. Well, there's a new feature in InDesign CS6 that makes that task just a little easier: "Alternate Layout" to the rescue! >>

Breaking news! Oh the horror! The horror!

We received an anonymous tip as we were finishing out this week's edition of the newsletter. The email subject line said simply "Watch this...if you dare." So of course, we couldn't not dare after reading something like that. We're sorry we did. "A Christmas Story 2: The Official Sequel." Who in their right mind would think it would be a good idea to mess with a classic like "A Christmas Story"? You just don't do that. Honestly, the original movie existed at the apex of the form: it represented perfection in storytelling and acting. After that there's nowhere left to go but down. And someone made that journey. We know just what the Old Man would say about that and we can't print it here. That's right! "The "queen mother" of dirty words. The F-dash-dash-dash word!" >>

The Weekly What? is more fun when you share! It's easy, just click the "Forward email" link below... keep going... a little farther down... there it is! Send this newsletter to a friend! Don't worry, we won't hit them up for money.
