It's the Weekly What? for Friday, July 13th.
Bad luck?! You're reading the Weekly What? That's tremendous good fortune!
Yeah, it's Friday The 13th. Again. We guess you could say that we're experiencing "panic fatigue" and just can't be bothered to get all that worked up about another Friday the 13th. So we're just going to step back from the computer, grab a pitcher of iced tea and a stack of cookies and go lounge on the Writing Room executive balcony. While we're gone, please feel free to peruse this edition of the Weekly What? We've got a fabulous line-up for you this week: banana cats, work tips for boosting productivity, summer drink recipes, and lots more! So when you're done reading, head on over to our Facebook page and leave your answer to this week's question: "What's your favorite thing about summer?"
Kitten, dressed as a banana split, eats a banana.
No, that's not the intro to a lame joke. But we did want to get this newsletter started off the right way: with a goofy video of a cat eating a bee-nanner. Dressed in a banana split costume. (Sorry, not a Banana Split but just ice-cream and stuff. With a banana. Y'know.) So anyway... BEHOLD! Kitten eating a banana! >>
The real world needs more LEGO...
Most public infrastructure is really boring looking. Concrete gray everything? Booooooring. Just think how much more fun getting around town might be if more things looked like they were made of LEGO! Behold the LEGO bridge >>
Office productivity!
Sorry, we really mean it. Here's a selection of 10 tips to help you pull out less of your hair when working with Microsoft Office. Get busy! >>
We can all learn a thing or two from the underdogs...
And it's not all about the care and handling of red PJ's with a big white "U" on the front. Nope. Underdogs aren't just about the rare "feel good" story about a little guy overcoming crazy-big odds to win the day (or to finally, finally get a McBurger WITHOUT onions, dangit!) No, underdogs win out against the big guys way more than we all think and Malcom Gladwell lets us in on a few of the little guys' big ideas. "The cry goes up both far and near..." >>
Question? Comment? Find a typo? Got something you think should be in the newsletter? Talk back to us and let us know! (We need something to do since the monkeys do all the writing.)
Got a bunch of kids whining that they "have nothing to do"?
Put 'em to work making books! You know, paper books. Actually, blank journals perfect for scrapbooking or creating comics, or writing down esoteric thoughts and musings in. Here's a bonus idea: When they're done, make them record their book making experiences in their new book! Muahahahaha! You can be like Mo in Inkheart! >>
Tips for making your press releases more social media friendly
Press releases! You know 'em, you love 'em. Those booooring missives that fall to the unluckiest in your organization to write. Know what? They don't have to be boring, plus they can actually do some work for you, especially in a social media setting! So review these tips and make your next press release go to work for you! Yes, we have no bananas. >>
Summer refreshments corner!
First up, we present a fabulous treat for when the swamps of Dagobah get super sultry and you just want to hang out in the cool darkness of your mud hut. The Yoda Green Sherbet Sundae! We suggest this variation: throw in an extra scoop of Sherbet and some lemon-lime soda to create a more fizzy, swampy dessert.
Yoda's Green Sherbet Sundae too nerdy for you? How about some more conventional frosty beverages that are perfect for hanging out on the patio during the hot afternoons when you just can't be bothered to write any more press releases (that no one will read, most likely). Here's a great round-up of refreshing summer drinks that aren't nerdy.
Of course, life isn't all about funny drinks. You need cookies! May we present a few really great gluten free cookie recipes. (Hey, Writing Room monkeys know bananas, we know cookies.) Great for those among you that can't eat wheat and for everyone else a perfect excuse to try another cookie. ("Oh, gluten free, huh? What do those taste like? Hm. I better try another just to make sure I've got it. Yeah... I think I better try one more...")
Time again for another... Free Font Friday!
Who doesn't love free fonts? This time around we've found a great gathering of really nice looking, useful fonts. Usually all the freebies are wacky looking display fonts that you could only reasonably use on occasion. There's also a few fun fonts in the mix for good measure. Enjoy! Fonts! Fonts! Fonts! >>
