It's the Weekly What? for Friday, June 8th.
Another Friday, another chance to snag a donut with sprinkles.
As we walked through the Writing Room recently, amid the deafening clatter of the nearly infinite number of monkeys hammering away at their Smith-Coronas (Hey, this ain't Shakespeare that you're reading!), it occurred to us that we hadn't thanked our readers for a while. We'd just like to let you know that we appreciate you sticking with us through thick and thin, through the humorless times and the bad jokes, the typos and atrocious grammar. Hey! Things can only get better, right? So thank you. All two or three of you. Skim through this edition of the newsletter and pick out the least boring entries and enjoy. Once you're done, you should probably get back to work... the boss is probably getting suspicious. But before you do, please head on over to our Facebook page and leave your answer to this week's question: "What would you do without a computer or smartphone?"
Public Service Announcement: LinkedIn hacked, possible theft of millions of account passwords
On Wednesday, June 6th, several news sites reported that someone had claimed to have hacked LinkedIn and posted about 6 million account passwords. We recommend that if you have a LinkedIn account you change your password as soon as possible. Read more >>
Free Font Friday!
Remember that scene in the movie where Indiana Jones is looking for free fonts in that temple in the jungle and he winds up settling for some dumb old solid gold statue instead and almost gets squished for his troubles? Since we love you guys and don't want you getting squished (who'd read our stuff?) we'll just point you to the actual location of the freebies. They're all right here. No boulders, no poison darts, no snakes.
Like herding cats, only easier.
Managing an event can be a little crazy but here are four tips that can help you out as you plan your next event. While this article is targeted at non-profits, it's info anyone can use as they drive their herd of felines across the dusty plains of event management! Git along little dogies! Hyah! >>
Sherman, set the Wayback Machine...
This interesting little infographic not only lays out the history of videogame color technology, it also makes us feel really old! (Because we've played games on ALL of these systems! Well, not the one from 1958. Jeesh.) Where's the Atari 2600?? >>
Question? Comment? Find a typo? Got something you think should be in the newsletter? Drop us a line and let us know! (Plus, it gets awfully quiet around here sometimes.)
Frequent flyer miles for fruits and veggies?
Of course we buy lots of bananas (and typewriter ribbon) for the Writing Room monkeys, but sometimes we're faced with buying other fruits and vegetables that apparently made journeys of thousands of miles by plane, train and, er, truck to get here. Part of the reason is that when apples aren't in season here, they are somewhere else. If you'd like to unleash your inner locavore, go check out these two charts that detail the growing seasons for various fruits and veggies. Buying in season also means fresher produce from local growers! ...And knowing is half the battle! >>
"God save the Queen!"
Every now and then we catch ourselves wondering what the Queen of England wore to that one garden party in 2010. (The Royal one, not just any old garden party.) Well, we need wonder no more! In observance of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, Pantone teamed up with London ad agency Leo Burnett to create a Pantone fan chart that documents all the colors of the Queen's royal outfits. Really. Crystal Blue, PMS 13-4411. Fabulous! >>
DIY Corner!
Here's a fun and easy how-to for making those funky little "antiqued" wooden signs that feature apparently random words, like "Lemons" and "Cocoa" and other oddly decontextualized words, that you see hanging in everyone else's kitchens except your own.
If you're like us, you've accumulated way more coffee mugs than you can usefully use for several lifetimes. (Bearing slogans like "Best Employee," "#1 Dad," and "I {heart} my Chinchilla.") But you don't want to just throw them out and dumping them on Goodwill seems even worse as some other unsuspecting soul could wind up with your "Golf Jedi Tournament 1998" mug (featuring Yoda wielding a driver instead of a Lightsaber). So what do you do with all those extra mugs? Turn them into slightly less tacky planters!
What do you get when you combine Star Wars, M.C. Escher, and LEGO?
Pure awesomeness. Take a look! >> In case you've forgotten what the original "Relativity" by Escher looks like, You can see it here. There. Now you've had an art lesson!
The Weekly What? is more fun when you share! It's easy, just click the "Forward email" link below... keep going... a little farther down... there it is! Send this newsletter to a friend! Don't worry, we won't hit them up for money.
