It's the Weekly What? for Friday, June 1st.
It's going to be another stellar "Heinz 57" kind of newsletter!
We've got baseball, cats, boring business-y stuff (only enough so you can justify reading this on office time!) a craft project, and even some self-improvement stuff! Where else can you find so much edu-tainment in such a small package? No, don't answer that question. (iPhones don't count.) When you're done here, swing by the break room and snag another donut (with sprinkles!) and get on over to our Facebook page and leave your answer to the Weekly What? question: "What's one of your craziest pet stories?"
Catch of the day...
In their May 24th game against Everett, Lower Columbia College's outfielder Derrick Salberg made an incredible backwards leap over a fence to catch the final out, clinching the win against Everett. The amazing anti-gravity catch went on to make SportsCenter's #1 play of the day on Friday, May 25. Watch a video of The Catch. You can also view a fantastic sequence of still photos of the same moment here.
A Tale of Two Kitties
Inspired by their real-life feline experiences, our friends over at SpykerMedia have just launched their YouTube series "A Tale of Two Kitties." Go watch the first episode in which we're introduced to the family and learn that they'll have to make some unexpected adjustments to their household! Good luck guys. Tip: It's the cat's house. You just live there.
It's the end of reading as we know it...
Forget the Kindle and the Nook and all those other eReaders, those are so 2011. "Augmented Reality" is the new thing and it's going to... slightly irritate/wow/not impress you. Probably all three at once. Download an app, aim your iGizmo at the indicated magazine content, annnnnd stuff happens. Could be an animated overlay, videos, whatever! Social media integration, too! Fully buzzword compliant! We're not being smarmy, really. Like QR codes, the technology holds promise to truly enrich the user experience. It also holds the power to drive people crazy. Hey! The banner ad isn't dead yet!
You know banner ads, right? Those ads that you've been ignoring on websites since 2007? Well, while you weren't paying attention, they've gotten pretty sophisticated. Whether or not the ads actually generate revenue isn't really the issue here, it's that the ads are clever and sometimes amusing. Here's a collection of short videos describing 10 "insanely clickable" banner ads. In fact, one ad in particular was clicked on for 67 minutes! We won't spoil it for you so you'll just have to go check them out! Click-click-click-click >>
Language Korner! "Grammar Goofs"
We hesitate to even include something like this in this newsletter, the literary train wreck that it is. But we will for no other reason than the article addresses the whole "your/you're" thing. Careful, your participle is dangling! >>
What does your workspace look like?
We believe wholeheartedly in the notion that a clean desk is the sign of a sick, sick mind. (By that metric, we're in possession of sparkling intelligence. Yay!) Snarkiness aside, it's always fascinating to see where people ply their trade. Photographer Joseph Holmes has been documenting various workspaces for the last few years and has posted a selection of photos showing some fabulously cluttered and messy workbenches and desks. One is frighteningly tidy. You'll recognize it when you see it! Beware the clean desk! >>
Again with the old "One person's trash is another's treasure."
So this jewelry maker over in Soho, London, makes these intriguing necklaces with small clay tubes salvaged from the banks of the river Thames. Turns out that these little tubes are actually century-old tobacco pipes, the long-ago equivalent of cigarettes. The were apparently tossed into the river by the bazillions by 19th century litterbugs. But now they're cool looking necklaces! We imagine that in another hundred years artisan jewelry makers will be using plastic water bottles that they find everywhere. >>
5 minute craft project!
Get some modeling clay (Play-Doh will even work!) and sculpt your very own super-cute liddle-biddle hedghog! How can you not like it? Squee! >>
