It's the Weekly What? for Friday, May 18th.

It's Facebook's world, you only live in it.

In this internets version of a boring TV reality show, everyone is all abuzz (Monkeys wanted to say "atwitter," but we can't have that when the focus is on Facebook!) over just how much money Facebook founder whatzizname is going to be stuffing under his mattress after Facebook launches its IPO. Part of the hype is the fact that we've all shared our personal info with FB and it now knows exactly how to push our little consumerist buttons. Eh, whatever. Fortunately this newsletter isn't entirely devoted to the Book of Face: we've got lots of incredibly cool stuff for you to waste your precious time on. The best part is that there's even more over on our Facebook page! So when you're done here, reload the coffee mug and head on over there for even more procrastination! And don't forget to leave an answer to the Weekly What? question: "What would you do if you found yourself with the afternoon free?"

The secrets of advertising on Facebook

As indicated by the introduction, the hot news this week is that Facebook is going to rake in an umptybillion dollars when they go public. However, all that crazy cash is based on the assumption that Facebook will be able to deliver on its promise of super-duper ultra targeted advertising which will drive us all to purchase new Roombas for our kittens to ride upon. General Motors is having none of that and publicly announced that they're stopping all advertising on Facebook because they're not making any money that way. So what's the deal? Is Facebook a marketer's weapon of mass consumption or simply a way to irritate all your friends by notifying them when you're having a cup of tea? Continue reading >>

How much clout do you have in social media?

Have you heard of Klout? No? Really quick: It's a "service" that purportedly measures how much influence you have in all the social media that you participate in. Do people hang breathlessly on every little tweet to issue forth from your keyboard? Do your posts on Facebook cause economies to rise and fall? Klout measures all that and gives you a score from 0 to 100 to indicate your influence. (If Thor were to cross the bifrost and set up in Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, et al he might break 90.) Sound cool? Well, Forbes magazine is calling a little "bovine residue" on that. @Thor: For #Asgard! >>

The stories behind the logos

Ever wonder what "Nintendo" means? Or what's up with those four rings in the Audi logo? Bet you can't guess why 7-11 is "7-11." Pepsi gets the award for least-fun back story. Sorry Pepsi, but that's not even really very cool. Leg godt! >>

How to: Make super cute little strawberry boxes

Dante's Inferno... in LEGO!

These dioramas depicting the nine circles of hell give testament to the incredible capacity for expressiveness from little plastic bricks. The dioramas are all very artfully done and not a little disturbing. Don't worry it's SFW. Go take a look... if you dare! >>

Just keep your fingernails OUT of the chalkboard! >>

Finally, discover just how teeny and insignificant you are in the grand scale of the universe...

Sorry, that's not meant as a downer. Have you ever seen the movie "The power of 10"? If you're of a certain age, you likely saw this in a math or science class. This interactive Flash application covers similar material an interactive way that lets you view the relative scale of various bits and pieces of the universe. (It's a really amazingly huge place!) The Total Perspective Vortex has you! >>
