It's the Weekly What? for Friday, March 16th.
Same great newsletter with 25% less fat!
We're all over the place this week. Solar radiation zombies, hyper-intelligent birds, crafts, and tech love. We'd love to say more, but we'd spoil all the surprises and that'd be no fun, would it? So go hit the donuts (doughnuts?), swing by the coffeemaker before it's down to the dregs, and give us a read. If you've still got some donut left by the time you're done, head on over to our Facebook page for tons more "interesting" stuff: get out of the office and be more creative; discover Tokyo street fashions; find out how infographics lie to you; ad infinitum. Don't forget to leave an answer to the Weekly What? question: "What are your plans for St. Patrick's Day?"
So. Pinterest. Time sinkhole or social media powerhouse?
Interest in Pinterest (Oh! We're a poet and don't know it!) is really taking off. What's it all about? Who should care? Can you put it to use marketing your business? We'll be tackling these questions and more as we start our blog series focusing on Pinterest. Read more >>
In fair New York, where we lay our scene...
It's a classic tale of unrequited nerd-love: Pasty nerd-boy meets cool tech. Falls in love with enchanting female voice locked away within glass and alloy gizmo. Nerd-boy finally works up the courage to bare heart to the voice within said gizmo... rejection ensues. Nerd-boy flies into righteous nerd-rage and sues the manufacturer. Yeah, just another day in the crazy world of personal technology. Good luck with that, pal. >>
Toxic relationships: Do you need pruning shears or a chainsaw?
Sometimes the subtle "pruning" approach to cultivating personal and business relationships doesn't work. Sometimes you just gotta get all Ash Williams and start hacking away at what's not working with a chainsaw. Also: Blackberries, those things are just everywhere, amiright? Snip snip!
Solar Storm Weather Update: Everything's okay... or are they?
Did you notice last week's huge solar storm that disrupted global communications? Neither did we. But that's not to say that the lingering effects still couldn't turn significant portions of the populace into zombies. Or calcium dust. Don't put your chainsaw away just yet! >>
Crows really are really smart. Almost scary smart. Ever seen "The Birds"?
Prepare yourself to be astounded by the intelligence of crows! Thrill to the implications of a non-human animal so smart that it can make it's own tools! Witness the development of a vending machine for crows! Fear the backlash as the crows realize that they've been tricked into picking up trash! Tip: wear disguises, that'll throw them off.
Weekly What? "how-to" corner:
The "twine-ball light garland." Jazz up a boring string of mini-lights with twine-ball shades that you make yourself! Best part is that the project "is a little bit messy and a lot of fun." We're suckers for strings of fun mini-lights that cast cool shadows on the walls and ceilings. Always twining twining twining >>
Weekly What? Public Service Announcement:
Do you have a smartphone? Lock it up! No, no... we mean with a passcode. If you're like us, you all but need to staple your phone to your underpants so you don't just walk off and leave it at the coffee shop/bar/bookstore. (We scrapped that particular technique because sitting down got to be a bit uncomfortable.) Security software company Symantec conducted a study in which they left 50 specially prepared smartphones in various large cities. One startling statistic: 96 percent of the folks who found the phone tried to access personal or business information. So losing a smartphone could be a serious liability! Scary stuff, but you need to read it! >>
We're sorry if we got you all freaked out. Don't worry, everything will be okay.
Did you catch all the movie references? (And no, "The Birds" doesn't count.) Leave a comment on our Facebook page and let us know!
