It's the Weekly What? for Friday, February 24th.

The fifth horseman of the apocalypse will be wearing KEYBOARD PANTS.

This week's newsletter starts out all squeaky clean and seems to hold some promise for a newsletter populated by carefully curated links to sites of art and culture. Then the whole crazy train just jumps the tracks as we find ourselves confronted with KEYBOARD PANTS. There's really nothing to be said, you'll just have to go and see. Yes, KEYBOARD PANTS. Also, be sure to stop by our Facebook page for even more good stuff (No more KEYBOARD PANTS though) because this newsletter is just not big enough to contain all the crazy, wacky, arty, fun stuff you love. While you're there, don't forget to leave an answer to the Weekly What? question: "What's your favorite breakfast food?"

We'll see you there!

Let's start out with some good, clean design

Here's a fun gallery of old bar soap wrappers. According to several of the comments on the page, all the wrappers are of Polish origin which just adds to the general air of mystery that tends to surround old consumer packaging design. Our favorites are the bar proclaiming "FOR YOU" and also what is apparently a girl goose character from a kids' show. Don't forget to wash behind your ears!

DIY home-building is now easier than ever!

We suppose they might be a little heavy to lift, but these large, interlocking LEGO-style bricks would be awesome for building a house! Just rent a crane (one can do that, right??) and get busy! In-laws coming for a visit? Build them a cozy little bungalow with no door! Ha! Pipe dreams, though. In fact, the blocks were for a structure created for a festival in the town of Enschede in the Netherlands. Wouldn't it be sweet to have a house like that? Take a look >>

Having graphic designers over for a party?

When the black turtleneck-wearing crowd shows up at your doorstep, don't you dare serve up boring old crackers and cheese and whatever. Have a tray of jiggly letters ready to go. "Ooo! Typographic treats!" they'll exclaim. And, at that point, you'll realize that your party has become an utter flop. Send the normal folks and the DJ home and queue up some classic Star Trek on the Tivo. It's gonna be a long night. "Wait, are these Helvetica? Oh, so boring. Horrible party you've got here." >>

As a diversionary tactic you could have ready print-outs of these Downton Abbey paper dolls. Graphic designers just love clever things like this.

So what is it that makes an ad go "viral"?

Nooo, you don't sneeze on it. Here's an interesting little interview with a Harvard Business School prof explaining the findings of his research into what makes an ad worthy of going viral. He takes all the magic right out of it. Story, humor, a few surprises, and babies on skates and you're golden. No nudity, though. That'll sink you right there. Don't for get the joy! >>

Can you please turn your pants down? I'm on the phone...

A couple of Dutch designers have created a pair of jeans with an embedded keyboard, mouse, and SPEAKERS. That's exactly right! One winds up typing on one's crotch. No thank you. NEXT! If the zipper gets stuck, just press crtl-alt-delete >>

Amazing images created from assemblages of... stuff

Artist Bernard Pratz recreates images from a carefully arranged array of junk. Bits of old toys, shoes, packages, yard-sale bric-a-brac. What's even more impressive is that the images are not flat. If you were to step to one side or the other, you wouldn't see much more than a pile of junk. But when viewed from the right vantage point? Art. Click here to see a gallery of images and go here to view the artist's site. You'll also get to see some "behind the scenes" stuff. (The site's in French, but it's easy to get around.)

Have you heard of Pinterest? Here's a couple of perspectives on Pinterest's potential for business...

First, you might think Pinterest is of no use whatsoever for B2B marketing. Woah, hold up there pardner. Even if you're in a service industry, you might just have sufficient visual assets to make Pinterest a worthy addition to your social media marketing plans. Have a blog? Do you post any charts and graphs? How about photos of projects, seminars, etc? Pin it! Tips for putting Pinterest to work. >>

On the other hand, maybe Pinterest isn't for your small business. In this curmudgeonly article, the author suggests that if you can't convert traffic from Pinterest "pins" into sales, then maybe you shouldn't invest too much time messing about with Pinterest. Pinterest: It's not an ATM >>

Double Bubble bunk bed!

This is seriously awesome! A VW microbus-themed bunk bed! We want one of those so we can sit in the bottom and make engine noises. Vroom!! Beep beep! >>

Are you addicted to the internet?

Apparently a rather large-ish portion of respondents to an internet poll self-identified as "addicted" to the internet. This seems a bit like going into a smoke shop and asking for a show of hands "Who here feels addicted to cigarettes?" Anyway...the infographic provides a few other tidbits regarding our increasing taste for all things internetty (with sources cited!). Give it a read and you'll be able to bore people at your next cocktail party. Remember, you can quit whenever you want to >>

Are the walls in your office white? Ah ha! That explains a lot.

After we painted the walls of the Monkey Writer room blue, we saw a 37 percent increase in productivity. Most of that productivity consisted of inane drivel about bananas, but hey productivity is productivity, right? If they weren't so busy hammering away on their Smith-Coronas they'd probably try to unionize or something. Anyway, back to the subject at hand: Ever wonder what's the best color to paint the kitchen? What about the living room? Interestingly, pink is specified for a girl's room but nothing for a boy's room. Oh well, it must really be a Barbie world after all. Also: The secret behind all the red in McDonald's signage. You want fries with that? We're feeling a little blue...no wait! Lavender. Maybe >>
