It's the Weekly What? for Friday, February 17th.
We return to our regularly scheduled smorg of link-fun.
We learned our lesson last week to never let the writer-monkeys out of the office without their press passes. They apparently decided to go to a movie and then hit the zoo. Seems they were all mistaken for escapees, tased, and then carted off to the monkey house. The resident monkeys didn't know what to make of them and a riot ensued. So lots of phone calls, pulled strings, and substantial payoffs later we have our writing staff back, hammering away at their Smith-Coronas. We hope you enjoy the somewhat elevated quality of this week's newsletter! After perusing the various and sundry links, please stop by our Facebook page and leave an answer to the Weekly What? question: "If you could have dinner with any three people, whom would you choose?"
We'll see you there!
The evolution of the lesser spotted North American cake.
Really, cakes didn't just happen. They had to be created and evolved over time to arrive at the point they're at now. A lengthy, time-consuming process. We could tell you more but it would probably bore you to death. Hence this fabulous InfoGraphic! We always thought "Baked Alaska" was some sort of fish dish
"Cujo" has nothing on these pups
Jowly, flews-y, fangy. The black and white photo, especially, makes us think of some angry cousin of the Loch Ness Monster. Photographer Seth Casteel takes some pretty amazing photos of dogs plunging into water after various toys. Look, if you dare! >>
The semicolon. What is it for, really?
Long considered the Duckbilled Platypus of punctuation, the mystery of the semicolon is finally revealed, in startling clarity. Follow this link; it's amusingly illustrated. >>
Data, properly visualized
Data can be visualized in many ways, and there is no one correct way to do it. Some techniques are boring, some confusing, some bring amazing clarity. Honestly, we can't say this particular example is effective or just pretty, or maybe both, but it does hold one's attention. It's an unfortunately brief portrayal of power output data collected from 713 gas turbines over a 15 day period. Go see >>
Homer Simpson knows that sprinkles make everything better
Don't bother buying sprinkles at the store. Strictly for dilettantes. If you're serious about making everything better (with sprinkles) then you'll want to make your own. Here's how. Make any flavor you want. Like bacon! >>
There's "tiny" but these chameleons are super tiny!
Well, maybe not "super tiny." That title may belong to a species of dwarf gecko. These chameleons are just really, really tiny. About an inch long, nose to tail. They're also super cute. (Because they're so tiny.) Watch your step >>
Got any crafty ideas for "upcycling" USB memory sticks?
Because you're gonna need 'em soon. Unfortunately we didn't properly foresee the demise of the CD-R and now our offices are a model of CD-R craft re-use. Lamp shades, disco balls, curtains, coasters, sun-catchers, ad infinitum. We've been wondering what the heck we can do with all the USB memory sticks we've got laying around. USB memory sticks are on the way out >>
As with any kind of design, it's about more than just looking cool.
Ultimately, good design makes something more accessible, more useful. This is especially true of digital media. If you want to read a bit more about the growth and maturation of interface design into "user experience design" (or "interaction design") then give this article a read. It's interesting stuff. Possibly boring if you're a numbers person though. Can you guess what an "infauxgraphic" is? >>
Awesome Soviet space propaganda posters
After taking a look at this gallery of fantastic poster designs, you'll want to want to grab your space helmet and hop into the next rocket to the moon! Seriously though, it's interesting how space is no longer the new frontier but a place for tourists. Launches are lucky to even get a sidebar in the daily papers. October opened the road to space! >>
It's that time again! Free Font Friday!
Here's 25 free fonts for your next ransom note. Can't beat free! >>
Finally, we'd like to bring a little paranoia into your life...
So it seems that the Department of Homeland Security has a social media monitoring program. Unfortunately (or fortunately) they can't seem to get their act together. You just know that some contractor is going to use this system to spy on their ex or something. 1984 is arriving a little late... >>
