It's the Weekly What? for Thursday, February 2nd.
We have a weird sense of déjà vu
Okay campers, rise and shine! Wait... Groundhog Day was yesterday, wasn't it? Or is it today? Oh ha ha! We're just messing with you guys. So... apparently Phil the Groundhog saw his shadow and thus doomed us all to another 6 weeks of winter. Us? We don't believe it for a second. After consulting our Magic 8-Ball several times, we predict the arrival of spring on... March 20th. We'll see. While you're waiting, please stop by our Facebook page and check out everything that didn't make it into this week's newsletter. Because, you know, if it didn't make the cut into the newsletter it's got to be some awesome c-grade material, right? At the very least, leave an answer to the Weekly What? question: "If you could live one day of your life over again, which would it be?"
We'll see you there!
Want to get us to buy something? Combine it with LEGO.
These LEGO-themed Moleskine notebooks are fabulous! They have an actual LEGO brick embedded in the cover so you can build onto the cover if you so desire. (And—oh!—do we desire!) They'll be available March 1st, so get your pre-order in now! Out of our way!! "Think with your hands" the books say...
Thrills! Suspense! Last-minute design!
There's nothing like the rush of leaving a job until the last moment. You know that logo for Google's Gmail service? Yeah, that one. The one that looks like it was designed the night before the service went live. Well it WAS designed the night before the service went live! Here's the harrowing (but very short) tale of the heroic all-nighter to churn out the Gmail logo. Seriously, these sorts of things are like action-adventure stories for designers. You wanted it tomorrow?! >>
Make a really nifty chandelier
Do you know what a "capiz shell" is? Yeah, neither do we. Still, here's a really neat tutorial for making your own capiz shell-style chandelier out of a thrift-store lampshade and a bunch of wax paper circles. It's a bit labor-intensive (we needed a nap after reading about it) but it looks fairly straightforward and not terribly tricky. The end result is fantastic! Can you say "capiz"? >>
Design isn't all action and adventure...
...There's a dark side, too. One that makes our blood run icy-cold like a frappelattechino stored at the bottom of the office fridge. A "creative overdose" is but one symptom. Beware. Beware! (There a pun coming, look out!) "En space" no one can hear you scream. >>
Once upon a time we didn't use computers for art stuff...
Yeah, really! We were stuck with pencils, rub-on type, proportional wheels, airbrushes (the kind that actually sprayed paint everywhere and generally made a mess). Paste-up? Yeah, that meant burning your fingers on hot wax and stabbing yourself with an X-Acto knife. Stat cameras? Oh my goodness. (We still have a roll of Borco around here somewhere...) Oh snap! There went my pencil tip... >>
Walmart's "two-pizza teams"
What? Now that's a team we wouldn't mind being a part of! Actually the "two-pizza" thing is WalmartLabs' reference to the small size of their digital media development teams. What, you didn't know that Walmart is moving into the mobile e-commerce and social media space like a 900-pound gorilla parallel parking a Smart Car? Please ignore the dancing people >>
Remember the "Anal-Retentive Chef" on Saturday Night Live?
Well, look what happens when you release an anal-retentive artist to impose order on his world. This is a neat series of "before and after" photos in which artist Ursus Wehrli organizes such things as alphabet soup, parking lots, and sand boxes. Make sure to follow the link to the artists site and watch the "making of" video! The secret is getting all the pieces the same size... >>
Office envy!
Even if we weren't a LEGO fan, we'd want to work in this office. Really, who wouldn't love a slide in the workplace? It would probably be tough for us to get any work done, though...
Social media really isn't a waste of time!
We've written before that social media can be useful for business (as have many other folks) and we've provided a few tips on making the most of your time on social media. However, this infographic defines "waste of time" in a completely different manner. Framed from a social perspective, social media really isn't a waste of time if you spend it looking for old friends, watching videos of kittens on a Roomba, and uploading photos of your trip to the bowling alley. Wait, what? Did we just talk in a circle or something? >>
Color "sins and virtues"
This is a great refresher on color theory and use. It may be just the basics, but it's the basics (or the incorrect application thereof) that get so many of us in trouble! Thou shalt study the color wheel! >>
Iconic album covers given the kitten treatment
We remember a time when album covers were awesome and one could spend hours flipping through the racks at the local record store. Now we're stuck with little thumbnails on iTunes. Boo. Anyway, take a look at this gallery of iconic album covers that have been vastly improved through a dramatic increase in the kitten quotient. The Madonna cover is our fave!
Repairing the buildings of the world with LEGO
Artist Jan Vormann has been traveling the world shoring up crumbling buildings and walls with LEGO bricks (well, we spy some "not-LEGO" in there, but we won't get all picky and LEGO-snobby on you). The result, in some applications, is fascinating, as if a layer of the structure has peeled away, revealing the LEGO that was always there, under the brick and mortar. Good for building and rebuilding! >>
Mona Lisa with a mustache? She ain't got nothin' on these things!
We'll warn you now: do not drink coffee as you view the galleries of bad art. Don't eat. You may wind up shooting coffee and donuts out your nose. Wow. Just wow. >>
