It's the Weekly What? for Friday, January 20th.
Wring us out, it's the weekend!
We don't know about you all, but it's been a while since we were this soggy. In fact, we're writing this edition of the newsletter wearing a snorkel. Seriously though, we hope everyone reading this manages to stay safe and dry. Speaking of dry, since there's no good reason to venture outside, why don't you drop by our Facebook page when you're done reading the newsletter and answer the Weekly What? question: "Where would you like to be right now?"
We'll see you there!
Again with the "secret" of social media...
Webtrends recently posted an interesting article on their blog about the need for marketers to change how they communicate with their customers. Bottom line: Less talking at and more talking with. We've written about this before: Business on social media isn't about making a sale, it's about making friends first and building trust. The secret lives of water droplets
Yeah, there's a lot more going on than "splish splash" it seems. Photographer Jim Kramer mixes a little food coloring and dishwashing soap into some water and then snaps a picture at just the right moment. The images are so groovy, they almost look fake! (But they're not!) Splish splash I was takin' a bath... >>
Is it sculpture? Is it painting?
Okay... *pop* ...you hear that? That was our minds just going blooey. We stared at these images and watched the video with our noses pressed right up against the screen and we still can't tell how the fish aren't 3D elements. Watch the video! It's amazing and mind blowing. Artist Riusuke Fukahori creates his astounding pieces by painting on a layer of poured resin, then covering that with another layer or resin and then more painting. The fish are built up of a series of painted layers to create an incredible three-dimensional appearance. "Goldfish Salvation" it's called... >>
Computer fashion, circa 1986
As you'll soon see, those two words "computer" and "fashion" can indeed coexist in the same sentence. Sort of. Still, we really REALLY like that watch on the page 12 scan. As soon as someone invents a time-machine, we're going back to buy one. Turn that collar up! Tease that hair! Point-n-click! >>
Life in the sun
We wish that all advertising looked this good. This amazingly fun commercial for Italian sunglass brand Persol really has us looking forward to the warmer, sunnier, and drier days of summer when we can don our shades. (Probably won't be Persol, but hey!) When you are cool the sun shines on you 24 hours a day! >>
Hail to our soon-to-be robot overlords!
The SPHEREs are pretty cool but our favorite is iRobot's Ava with its combination of available technology like the iPad and Xbox Kinect sensor. Tell the robot where it needs to be via your iPad and it figures out how to get there. It'll even avoid running over puny hu-mans on the way! Of course, the cardboard 'bot gets the nod for DIY coolness. Danger Will Robinson! >>
Remember typewriters?
We remember using a Smith-Corona wayyyy back in high-school. Of course there were a few Macs at school, but when we had to process a few words at home? The typewriter. No "undo." "Cut-n-paste" consisted of actually cutting a paragraph from one sheet and pasting it at the bottom of another. Anyway, enough about us... check out this gallery of beautiful and sometimes bizarre-looking typewriters. Click-click-click >>
Get rid of red-eye in about a minute!
Are you bothered by red-eye? Wait... sorry, not that kind. We mean in your digital photos, you know when folks have freaky glowing red eyes like they're Terminators or something. Here's a quick and easy way to banish that dreaded Terminator look using Photoshop's "hidden" tool. I'll be back.
Add some Star Trek spiff to your cube
Tired of folks just barging into your cube all "blah blah TPS report etcetera blah"? Get the Star Trek electronic door chime (modeled after the red communicator panels from the original series) and when someone dares to breach the threshold, you can have it sound the red alert! Or, if you're more relaxed, you can have it sound that distinctive door opening sound. Swoosh! >>
Forget bearskin rugs...
...Drop one of these in front of the fireplace. Made from 100% stuffed-animal skins! Kinda weird, but cool looking >>
A folder that's not a folder
We apologize for ending on a work-related note, but this is a pretty neat idea: It's a pocket folder that isn't. Through the use of a simple fold, an oversized sheet of paper becomes a pocket folder. Stash a few papers inside. Open it up and you can completely unfold the piece to reveal even more printing real-estate for your project. Can't do that with a traditional pocket folder! In fact, we remember doing stuff just like this in school to make cheapo folders (yeah, we were too cheap to spring for Pee Chee folders!) Fabulous folds!
Share the fun with a friend! It's easy, just click the "Forward email" link below. They'll be glad you did!
