It's the Weekly What? for 11/11/11

So what's the big deal with the 11th day of the 11th month of the 11th year of the 21st century?

For starters, it's one of those funny calendar coincidences that only happens once every 100 years. Last year we had 10/10/10. Did you hear any fuss? Well, 11 is different. Medieval numerologists held 11 to be Pure Eeeeevil! But since it's a Friday this century, the evilness is canceled out by it being the end of the week. If you've got a better explanation of 11/11/11, let us know. Okay, so. Take a few to peruse the decidedly "not-evil" links we've gathered for this edition of the newsletter. We've included an extra-special link to a story about the evils of double-spaces between sentences. Don't forget to stop by our Facebook page for some extra non-evil links! While you're there, please leave your answer to the Weekly What? question: "What's your favorite daily ritual?"

We'll see you there!

A behind-the-scenes look at the creative workflow.

The art of toys

We have a hard enough time just trying to get one side to match on those dang ol' Rubik's Cubes, so we were pretty stunned by this amazing gigantic mosaic created with Rubik's Cubes. Then there's this bit of sidewalk-chalk Trompe l'oeil featuring LEGO minifigures styled after China's terracotta warriors. We guess this isn't strictly art, but "furniture as art" or maybe "arty furniture." It's still a really neat LEGO-style sofa.

Vancouver Rotary "Festival of Trees" YuleTube Holiday Video Contest!

Dig up your beret and megaphone, it's time to make some movies! (Short ones: 60 seconds is your time limit, "Mr. Cameron.") They need to be holiday-themed and the two winners, by a popular and Judges' Choice, will each win a $150 Best Buy gift card! Entries are due by November 23. What are you waiting for? Get busy! Annnnd action!! >>

As much fun as watching paint run...

...and it is, really. Mesmerizing, in fact. And these "tall paintings" look neat hung on the wall, too. Watch... >>

Amazing urban planning: Eixample district, Barcelona

The work of Ildefons Cerda, a Spanish urban planner, the Eixample district of Barcelona features a striking grid design and was far ahead of its time. It's really interesting when viewed from high above so you can see contrast between the Eixample district and the other, more conventional neighborhoods. We wonder what it's like to live there? >>

Deadlines

A short movie about the relationship between time and the quality of creative output. Note to clients: the whole 10 seconds vs. 10 minutes thing doesn't really apply in a professional setting. So don't go getting any ideas. :) Watch! >>

It's fall and time to get outside and rake the leaves.

Or maybe not! Check out this awesome bouquet you can make from autumn leaves! Rake 'em and make 'em! >>

Do you type two spaces between sentences? Stop it!!

We understand where the modern practice of "two spaces between sentences" thing came from. Typewriters. But hey, we won't say anything. Give this amusing rant against two-spaces read. One space! ONE SPACE! >>

Finally: It's Friday! Perfect time for some "Nyan Cat"!!

A poptart cat flying through space leaving a rainbow contrail. (Oops, I think we just spoiled it.) You'll love it or you'll hate it, but it'll change your life! Soooo cute! Watch 'em go! >>
