It's the Weekly What? for Friday, October 21st.

It's alive! It's alive! We've got a monster-sized newsletter for you this week!

Hallowe'en is almost here. Are you ready? Or are you sitting around thinking you'll "just throw something together" after work on the 31st? Maybe buy a white trash can and paint it up to look like R2-D2? Lame. We're here to rescue Hallowe'en for you with a great selection of links that'll help you decorate, cook up some great treats and create a killer costume. All for next to nothing! We love the Internets! And, if you want more, be sure to stop by our Facebook page for even more Hallowe'en fun and inspiration! And while you're there, please leave your answer the Weekly What? question: "What is your favorite scary movie or TV show?"

We'll see you there!

Read this in case of costume emergency:

Okay, we'll get right down to it: Here's 10 ideas that skirt the ragged edge of lameness and are to be used only in dire emergency. Like "Okay, we're leaving for the Halloween party in 15 minutes, are you ready?" and you need to just throw something together. Okay, so we saved you. You're welcome. Just don't do it again. (But you probably will.) You're supposed to be "Iron Chef"? Really?? >>

What's a Hallowe'en party without caramel apples?

The best part is you can top these babies with just anything you can think of: candy sprinkles, chocolate chips, caramelized fire-ants, M&M's. Fun to make and fun to eat! Get dipping! >>

The best kind of spider: Chocolate spiders!

These remind us of the "chocolate covered spiders" our great-grammymaw used to make. She also made chocolate-covered fire-ants ("Chocolaty good with a kick! Woowee!"), chocolate-covered scorpions ("You pinch that dang ol' stinger off or you'll be regrettin' it!"), and chocolate-covered possums ("Mean ol' thangs, but good in chocolate!"). These promise to be a lot more fun to make and eat. Go make some! >>

Candy corn cupcakes!

Candy corn cupcakes! Candy corn cupcakes!! What else do we need to say! Get over there already! >>

Spiderweb plates...

Because you'll need something stylish to serve your caramel apples, chocolate-covered possums, and candy corn cupcakes on! Easy to do, so make a few >>

Okay, so while your caramel apples are cooling, here's some crafty things to keep you busy:

Feel like tackling some off-the-hook pumpkin carving?

If you're ready to take this year's jack-o-lantern to the next level, check out this selection of intricately carved pumpkins. Some of these things are just incredible! If you're not ready to commit hours and hours of time carving intricate shapes, perhaps barfing pumpkins are more your thing. This particular pumpkin is hilarious and a great way to use those tiny, super-cutesy pumpkins. Yeah, those little cutesy-poo things had it comin'. This tutorial on making a "cannibal pumpkin" is also a great way to learn how to use some of the peeling techniques seen in the previous pumpkin links. Finally, turn some of those ubiquitous plastic pumpkin trick-or-treat buckets into steampunk styled pumpkins. "Steampunkins"?

Animated Hallowe'en diorama

This is a really cool use of a clock mechanism. Turn it on its back, attach some foam or paper creepies to the hands and ta-da! You've got a moving diorama! With a zombie! Don't worry though, the zombie moves pretty slowly so it's not much of a threat. Just don't turn your back on it. Braiiiins! >>

Die fledermaus!

Sorry, no, not that one. Bats! Paper bats! Kick up the local spookiness a notch with a few strategically placed paper bats. Flitter flutter flip flap >>

Now it's time for some more serious costume inspiration.

We'll lead off with this really cute Imperial Walker (AT-AT) dog costume. Next is our personal favorite, the LEGO "minifig" costume. Do you have any little ones? Turn them into an owl! We suppose that you could also just scale this up to make a costume for yourself, maybe make it into some sort of majestic bird of prey or something. (Really, do you want to go to a party as a 40 year-old owl??) Finally, for some general inspiration, here's a selection of 25 crazy, funny, and cool Hallowe'en costumes to inspire you.

When it's all over, here's something for you to do after you recover from your sugar-induced coma: Candy-wrapper decoupage!

We have to admit this is a pretty neat idea: Decorating stuff with the wrappers of your favorite candy. ("Decoupage" if you're into fancy-talk.) Although, come November 1st, you might not want to see candy or anything related to it for another 364 days. Check it out! >>
