It's the Weekly What? for Friday, October 7th.
The leaves are turning and our thoughts turn to tons of candy...and tummy aches.
This time of year always drives us a little batty. (Oh! So punnish of us!) Folks talking about the "golds" and "firey reds" and "burnt oranges." What? No, we're all "See that tree over there? Its leaves are turning PMS 166! Beautiful!" But that just gets us weird looks. Oh the curse of seeing the world through a graphic designer's eyes. Anyway, please stop by our Facebook page for more fun stuff. And while you're there, please leave your answer the Weekly What? question: "What's your favorite color (and why)?"
We'll see you there!
With great (graphing) power, comes great responsibility
Information graphics like charts and graphs are great. Many times there's no better way to quickly and concisely communicate information. However, poorly created graphs can actually have the opposite effect and obfuscate your data! Practice safe information design with this short collection of "dos and don'ts" for charts and graphs! Design isn't always about the crazy stuff humans make and do...
We can look to the designs of Mother Nature for inspiration. Take the tara tree. They are "fog harvesters" and by doing so, create tiny ecosystems around their bases. Read more >>
Fantastic, beautiful vintage photos and illustration
Here's a fantastic gallery of vintage photos and illustrations dating from the late 1800's and later. Many of them are commercial in nature. It's fascinating that the print advertising landscape is so different these days, and maybe a little sad that we seem to have lost our taste for advertising that is art in its own right. Go see! >>
Drop and give me 20!
Mind pushups, that is! Is your brain lounging around on it's cerebral couch, pudgy little fingers deep in a bag of Cheesy Poofs? Yeah? Well give it some exercise! Hup-two-three-four! Feel the burn! Read on! >>
Homer, you eediot!
Weekly What? readers of a certain age will, perhaps, remember the Nickelodeon cartoon "Ren & Stimpy," a somewhat warped show starring a hairless Mexican Asthma Hound and a fat cat with a big blue nose. Recently, Ren & Stimpy's creator, John Kricfalusi, got his chance to create the "couch gag" at the end of "The Simpson's" opening sequence. D'oh! >>
QR codes, again. Do we get them or do we not?
Okay, so we've posted stories about QR codes and we seem to be flip-flopping on their usefulness. For the record, no we aren't. We here at the Muller Design Studio Worldwide Headquarters definitely "get" QR codes and believe in their utility. However, it's interesting to watch the apparent "love/hate" story unfold in the blogosphere. (That was the first and last time we shall use that particular term.) For your consideration, here's yet another story about QR codes. This time it's about how much traction they're gaining in the US and how successful they actually are. Read more >>
Uh huh huh huh. Huh huh huh.
Also in animation news: "Beavis & Butthead" are back. Really. If you thought they were funny before, well now they have the bottomless well of the Internet (and reality TV) to plumb for giggles. Also: They have an iPhone app! I want my MTV >>
Steve Jobs. 1955-2011
Finally, with no small amount of sadness, we note the passing of Apple Computer's Steve Jobs. Here's what we think is a fitting tribute to his business legacy. (Via our friends at Lower Columbia College) Don't settle. >>
