Fundamentally, making a sale is all about trust. The bridge from "just looking" to "paying customer" is built on trust... prospects give you a little of their trust, buy, and if you don't betray that trust then they'll become a repeat customer because it's easier and more comfortable to deal with someone you know than someone you don't.
