Looking for STAR Reporters

The JCC Maccabi Games need STAR Reporters who have a way with words, a knack for news and like to be near the action. The STAR Reporter Program was created to give non-athletes the opportunity to be a part of the JCC Maccabi Games.  Local Jewish teens ages 12-16 (as of July 31, 2009) will help report on the entire Westchester 2009 JCC Maccabi Games®. They will cover the Games from pre-planning to Closing Night; they will interview athletes and coaches, take photos and videos, produce a daily newsletter and help update the website.

The idea of the STAR Reporter Program is to have the reporters be their own "team" under the leadership of a STAR Reporter coach.  The reporters will participate (just like all other participants) in evening activities, Days of Caring and Sharing community service program, as well as, the Opening Ceremonies and the closing party.  As with the other teams, they will follow a daily schedule, enjoy Hang Time and serve as hosts to out-of-town athletes.

The Star Reporter program is designed for a variety of levels of experience.  Be a part of Team Westchester at the 2009 JCC Maccabi Games!   For more information contact Joanne Citrin, 472-3300, x285, citrinj@jccmw.org

Ping Pong Champ's Experience Serves Her Well

Meet Nettie Roth, Commissioner of Table Tennis

If baseball is a metaphor for life, than perhaps ping pong is the metaphor for longevity. Just ask 80-year old Nettie Roth, the newly-appointed Commissioner of Table Tennis for the 2009 JCC Maccabi Games in Westchester this August. Nettie began playing table tennis in her hometown of South Bend, Indiana. "We were a Jewish family that didn't live near the other Jewish families. I used to play wherever there was a table. For me it was a social thing." She cites easy and free access to the local town park as the key factors that allowed her to thrive in this ultra fast-paced sport. "I had good hand-eye coordination. I remember I rode a bicycle at a very early age. "  She added, "tennis would have appealed to me but I didn't have a tennis racquet or the money for it. Table tennis was free. I used to play every day, and when you play everyday, you get good."   Click here for full story.

Zaro's Bakery Makes Major In-Kind Donation

Zaros
Often the word "sponsorship" connotes a financial contribution in a business owner's mind.  However, in-kind donations of goods and/or services are also a very valuable sponsorship vehicle, and most welcome by the Game's organizers.  "We need a myriad of products such as sports equipment, aero beds, food products, table tennis tables and so on, for the Games," said Steven Weisbrot, Games Director. "We have a long list of things we need, and we welcome anyone's help in identifying donors of these items."  Click here for in-kind list.

Zaro's, the well-know bakery, has signed on as a major sponsor of this summer's Games.  Owners and brothers, Stuart and Joseph Zaro have committed to a generous contribution of paper goods, produce (including 6,000 bananas and apples), snacks, and of course their delicious baked goods. In addtion to donating products from their own business, Stuart and Joseph reached out to their suppliers for donations as well.  "Everyone was very happy to help," said Stuart Zaro.  Click here for full story
