Senator John Courson Named SCICU Legislative Champion

Columbia, S.C. - Senator John Courson of Columbia was named the 2012 SCICU Legislative Champion by the South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities for his untiring support of independent higher education throughout his distinguished career.
Elected to the State Senate in 1984, Senator Courson's career is marked by his interest and passion for education, particularly higher education. As chairman of the Senate Education Committee since 2005, he is an advocate for a reasonable and balanced approach to incredibly complex public policy issues in the rapidly changing world of education.
Senator Courson is the chairman of the Senate Finance Higher Education subcommittee where he is a staunch supporter of funding for the Higher Education Tuition Grants program and the state's merit scholarship programs. Earlier this year, he was elected President Pro Tempore of the Senate.
A graduate of the University of South Carolina and a Marine Corps veteran, Senator Courson has been recognized for his work in education with honorary degrees from The Citadel, USC, and the College of Charleston. He represents District 20 in Richland and Lexington counties.
Students from SCICU member schools will gather at the State House for Independent Higher Education Day on April 18. At that time, Senator Courson will receive the 2012 SCICU Legislative Champion Award during a noon ceremony on the south steps of the Capitol.

The $6.5 billion State Budget for FY 2012-13 passed the House by a unanimous vote on March 15. Using a combination of general appropriations and lottery revenue, the House funded the State's merit scholarships at their full statutory levels and the Higher Education Tuition Grants program at the current year's level. PASCAL is the #2 priority for up to $1.5 million in excess unclaimed lottery prize money.
At the level of funding approved by the House, next year's maximum tuition grant will be increased from $2,600 to $2,700. The addition of unobligated awards to the annual appropriations will make the $100 increase possible.
To support student financial aid programs for the fiscal year beginning July 1, the House allocated more than $313 million. While lottery proceeds make up the bulk of the allocation, general tax revenue in the amount of $96 million is needed to complete the funding.
The budget now goes to the Senate where the Finance Committee will complete its deliberations the week of April 23. Letters of support to members of the Senate are still important because the senators are not bound by the House bill and there are many agencies and programs competing for funds in a budget that is still smaller than the one passed in 2006.

Independent College and University Week
As recognized by a Proclamation by Governor Nikki Haley and a Concurrent Resolution by the General Assembly, the week of April 16-20 is Independent College and University Week and April 18 is Independent College and University Day.
More than 34,000 students attend the twenty SCICU member schools which are responsible for educating 14% of the state's undergraduates and awarding 24% of the baccalaureate degrees.
Independent colleges and universities are an economic force employing more than 6,500 faculty and staff members and spending almost $652 million annually. They are located across the state and are often the cultural and economic centers of their local communities.
These faith-based, value-centered institutions are rich and diverse in their missions and historical legacies, but they all have one thing in common: providing a very intensive and personal liberal arts education for the next generation of leaders.
As part of the celebration, SCICU will recognize an outstanding faculty member from each of our 20 institutions. At a dinner held on April 10 at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, the 2012 recipients of the Excellence in Teaching Awards will be honored by the education community and presented with $3,000 professional development grants.
On Independent College and University Day, students from across the state will rally at the State House to thank their legislators for supporting the Tuition Grants program, merit scholarships, and PASCAL. The morning's program will include the presentation of the Concurrent Resolution and remarks by Representative Chandra E. Dillard of Greenville. Representative Dillard is also the Director of Community Relations at Furman University.
In a brief ceremony on the steps of the Capitol at noon, Senator John Courson (see related article above) will receive the 2012 SCICU Legislative Champion Award for his long-standing support of student financial aid and independent higher education. Deputy Chief of Staff Ted Pitts from Governor Haley's Office will present the Governor's Proclamation. Ted is a 1994 graduate of Presbyterian College.

Allen University Inaugurates First Woman President

Dr. Pamela M. Wilson was inaugurated as the 24th president of Allen University, a historically black college of nearly 700 students located in Columbia on March 29. When she was elected president by the Board of Trustees in February 2011, Dr. Wilson became the first woman to hold that office in the history of the then 141 year old institution.
A week-long series of events celebrated Dr. Wilson's inauguration. The Right Reverend Dr. Preston Warren Williams II, Presiding Prelate of the 7th District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church and Chairman of Allen's Board of Trustees, presided over the investiture. Dr. Luns Richardson, president of Morris College, and Dr. Cleveland Sellers, president of Voorhees College, participated in the ceremony. Mike LeFever, SCICU president and CEO, brought greetings on behalf of the 20 members of SCICU.
A graduate of Voorhees College, Dr. Wilson earned a master's degree in English and American Literature from Indiana State University and a doctorate in English with an emphasis in rhetoric and composition from Ohio State. She taught at Georgia Southern University and Virginia State University before arriving at Allen University in 2006 as a Professor in English. In 2008, Dr. Wilson received the SCICU Excellence in Teaching Award. |
Columbia College Captures CHE Service Learning Award
The South Carolina Commission on Higher Education presented the 2012 Service Learning Award to Columbia College for its work with the Eau Claire community near the college's North Columbia neighborhood. Students from the Child and Family Studies major used training, technology, and resources provided by The Benefit Bank of South Carolina to establish the Eau Claire Community Resource Center located on the campus. The Benefit Bank is an online service designed to secure funds and services for individuals and families working to overcome poverty and to build long-term financial stability.
The students participating in the project interviewed families in the community and matched them with available benefit programs. In 2011, the Columbia College TBB program served 77 households, recovering over $83,000 in benefits for them.
In addition to providing a valuable service to the community, the 63 students participating in the project gained practical experience from how to establish a community center to how to interview and counsel families. They learned communications and management skills and had the opportunity to exercise professional practices such as confidentiality, active listening, empathy, professional decorum and dress, critical thinking, and problem solving.
At the awards ceremony today, CHE Commission Chairman Ken Wingate recognized programs from Columbia College from the independent college division, Tri-County Technical College from the 2 year public college division, and Francis Marion College from the 4 year public college division.
