Thanks to the hard work of SCICU Executive Vice President Eddie Shannon, SCICU was awarded 3 separate grants recently. The grants will help SCICU to increase its capacity to raise scholarship funds and to provide additional opportunities for minority students to participate in the Undergraduate Research Program. Look for reports on the progress of each program as we move into 2012.
FIHE CAPACITY BUILDING GRANT
SCICU has secured a $5,000 Capacity Building grant from the Foundation of Independent Higher Education (FIHE). The grant is entitled SCICU Trustee Appreciation/Prospective Donor Receptions designed to provide leverage to secure additional grants from targeted local corporations and foundations. The $5,000 will help with the costs of trustee appreciation/ prospective donor receptions to be held in Columbia, Greenville, Spartanburg, Charleston, and Myrtle Beach in the Spring/Summer of 2012.
CIC FIRST OPPORTUNITY VENTURE FUND
SCICU has secured a grant for $10,000 from the Council of Independent Colleges First Opportunity Venture Fund to supplement the SCICU Undergraduate Research Program to encourage underserved populations (low income, minority, first-generation students) to participate in the undergraduate research program.
FIHE NATIONAL VENTURE FUND
SCICU is partnering with Illinois, North Carolina, Washington, and Virginia and has received an $11,250 grant through the FIHE National Venture Fund to conduct a one-day seminar following the 2012 FIHE Annual Meeting in Chicago to specifically address the rapidly changing/challenging environment of corporate and foundation fundraising now facing our state organizations and to identify long-term strategies that will continue to keep our organizations responsive to our member colleges well into the future.

CAM Expands Access and Awareness
Throughout the month of October, high schools across the state hosted College Application Month events to assist students with the college application process. Organized by the Commission on Higher Education, it is estimated that 120 high school programs reached as many as 25,000 students with each student completing as many as four applications to colleges or universities. Community volunteers, including students, staff, and faculty from independent colleges and universities, staffed the events.
The goal of College Application Month is to provide a forum for all South Carolina seniors to complete and file college applications. While much of the focus of College Application Month is geared toward first-generation college students and students who may not otherwise apply to college, the event is open to all students.
A similar program, College Goal SC, is scheduled for February 18. At this event, volunteers will help high school students complete the FASFA application, the first step towards qualifying for scholarships and other student financial aid.
For more information about what South Carolina is doing to promote college access, go to the South Carolina Can Go to College (SC CAN ) website.
