Stand Up for Student Aid

We encourage those who support higher education in South Carolina to join college campuses across the state and nation and Stand Up for Student Aid by completing this on-line statement of support.

Many aspects of the federal student aid program are under attack from various Congressional committees. Not only are the House and Senate working to put together a FY 2011-2012 budget (which actually began under a Continuing Resolution on September 1), but a Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction-also known as the Super Committee-has until Wednesday, November 23, to come up with a plan to reduce the nation's deficit by $1.5 trillion.

SCICU Secures Grant

SCICU recently applied for and won a $5,000 grant from the Foundation of Independent Higher Education program of the Council of Independent Colleges. According to SCICU Executive Vice President Eddie Shannon, this grant will be used to build the capacity of SCICU's donor base by sponsoring 3 regional Trustee Appreciation and Prospective Donor Receptions in the spring and summer of 2012.

Eddie will work closely with the Development Committee and Russell Cook, the committee's chair, to achieve a successful outcome from this award.

McKinney Named SCICU Chief Integrity Officer

Kathy McKinney

SCICU Board of Trustees Chair Henri Baskins named Kath McKinney as the organization's chief integrity officer. This position was created when the Board adopted a Policy for Reporting Improper Conduct in 2010. Ms. McKinney, a shareholder with Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd, is the chair-elect of the SCICU Board of Trustees.

According to the policy, the chief integrity officer is a person appointed by the chair of the SCICU Board of Trustees who can assure that there will be a fair and impartial investigation of any allegation of improper conduct and that the outcome of the investigation will be based on the merits. The chief integrity officer reports directly to the Board of Trustees.

Drain, Paving Bring Improvements

Guests on rainy days to the SCICU office in Columbia can put away their waders. Recent construction has eliminated the chronic flooding in the parking lot. The conditions existed since before SCICU purchased the building in 1994.

Before with Eddie Shannon

A permanent solution to the drainage problem required a professional engineering study and the construction of a large in-ground drain field prior to site preparation and asphalting. The project was recommended by the Finance Committee and authorized by the Board in this fiscal year's budget.

SCICU regularly hosts committee meetings and meetings of

After Paving

professional affinity groups at its office. With the improvements, those attending the meetings will no longer have to roll up their pant legs to get to their cars. The Public Policy Committee and the Career Services Directors will be the first groups to experience the improvements.

Investment Team Receives National Recognition

Lee Bryan and Jason Zacks are part of a team at Deutsche Bank Alex. Brown that manages the investments in SCICU's two endowments.

Barron's recently recognized Lee on its list of top investment advisors in the United States in its 2011 edition of 1000 Advisors. Jason was recognized in On Wall Street's national list of the top 40 investment advisors under 40 years of age for the second consecutive year.

We congratulate both Lee and Jason on their well-deserved national recognition.

SCICU Staff Supports the United Way

Reflecting the community support and involvement of so many of our colleges and universities, 100% of the SCICU staff contributed to the 2011 United Way of the Midlands campaign. Donations increased by 44% over the previous year. As part of the UW Campaign Cabinet, Mike LeFever headed the six-county area campaign for professional associations.
