Campuses Come Alive
Moving In DormCampuses are quickly coming to life across South Carolina as the twenty SCICU member institutions welcome students for the 2010-2011 academic year. While this year's figures are not final, enrollment looks to be very strong throughout the membership and may exceed the more than 34,000 undergraduate and graduate students who attended one of South Carolina's independent colleges or universities last year.

Two SCICU members-Anderson University and Spartanburg Methodist College-are celebrating centennials this year. Both have planned a year's worth of special activities including commemorative events involving the communities of Anderson and Spartanburg.

SMC also will celebrate the inauguration of its seventh president, Dr. Colleen Perry Keith. The ceremony is set for September 10.

Three members welcomed new presidents on July 1. Dr. David Norman succeeded Dr. Randy Rubble at Erskine College. President Rod Smolla took over from Dr. David Shi at Furman University, and Dr. Scott Koerwer replaced Dr. Mick Zais at Newbery College.
Scholarship Winners Named
Amber Giles, a rising senior at Presbyterian College, has been named the J. Lacy McLean Independent College Student of the Year. Giles, from Rock Hill, SC, will receive a $2000 scholarship for the 2010-11 academic year in recognition of her academic achievements, leadership skills, and commitment to public affairs.

A biology major and chemistry and mathematics minor, Giles has served in leadership roles in Alpha Delta Pi sorority, Pre-Pharmacy Club, Student Union Board, Student Wellness Advisory Team, Honor Council, Panhellenic Council, Beta Beta Beta, and New Student Orientation. She has also volunteered with Special Olympics, Relay for Life, Good Shepherd Free Clinic, and charities benefitting St. Jude's Children's Hospital and bone marrow donors.

Plyler Hamilton, also a rising senior at Presbyterian College, has been named the Sterling L. Smith Scholarship recipient. Hamilton, from Greenville, SC, will receive a $1000 scholarship for the 2010-11 academic year in recognition of his academic achievements, leadership skills, and commitment to public affairs.

A biology major and chemistry and political science minor, Hamilton has served in leadership roles in Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, Student Union Board, Stirlings, Omicron Delta Kappa, and others. Hamilton has also volunteered with Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity, Relay for Life, and as part of PC's Service Day.

The J. Lacy McLean Scholarship is named in honor of J. Lacy McLean, who joined SCICU in 1954 and served as the organization's president for 34 years. The Sterling L. Smith Scholarship is named in honor of Sterling L. Smith, who joined SCICU in 1960 as the legislative liaison for the organization's member colleges and universities. Smith was instrumental in crafting the development of the South Carolina Tuition Grant program.

The recipients and their families will be honored at a luncheon as part of the October 5 meeting of the SCICU Board of Trustees at Columbia College. The annual award winners are selected by the Center for Scholarship Administration from dozens of applications received from students at SCICU member institutions.
College Guide Promotes Opportunities for Excellence
2010 College Guide CoverThe SCICU College Guide is published annually to assist students and their parents choose the college or university that meets each student's unique combination of intellectual, personal, and financial needs. It contains general information about South Carolina's independent colleges and universities, a location map, quick facts about the member institutions, detailed financial aid information, school visitation dates, and in-depth profiles of each of the 20 private colleges in South Carolina.

The 2010-2011 College Guide is distributed broadly to high school counselors and teachers, trustees, friends and supporters of SCICU, state legislators, and those interested in learning more about the excellent learning opportunities available at South Carolina's independent colleges and universities. A complete electronic copy will soon be available in the Publications section at www.scicu.org.
Heading for 100%
With the end of SCICU's fiscal year just 10 days away, the Development Committee is closing in on its goal of achieving 100% giving by members of the SCICU Board of Trustees. Committee Chair Russell Cook encourages all Board members to make their donations or fulfill their commitments by August 31.

Please contact SCICU Executive Vice President Eddie Shannon for more details.
South Carolina Gubernatorial Appointments Project
sc gapThe South Carolina Gubernatorial Appointments Project (SC GAP) is designed to increase the number of women in senior level appointed positions in South Carolina state government.  Co-chaired by the Honorable Candy Waites (D), formerly of Columbia College, and the Honorable Deb Sofield (R), this broad-based, bi-partisan coalition of political, business/professional, academic, government and non-profit groups will utilize its collective resources to reach out to all sectors to locate women who might be considered for senior level positions in state government.

SC GAP is working to assist the candidates for governor by locating qualified women for appointment to positions within their administration and will provide him/her with the names and resums of these women for consideration after the election. Previous governors have complained that they lacked information about women qualified to lead agencies, and the SC GAP project will alleviate this past problem. For information on positions likely to be available and to submit a resum, visit http://www.scelectswomen.com/sc_gap/

SCICU is a member of the SC GAP coalition, a project of the non-partisan Southeastern Institute for Women in Politics, a 501(c)(3) organization.
Newest Consortium Saves Big Bucks
Piggy SavingsOn September 1, twelve SCICU schools will formally join as a consortium in a Microsoft Campus Agreement. Working together to achieve economies of scale, these schools will be able to purchase Microsoft products at the lowest possible price (Level B) plus have direct access to Microsoft technical assistance. Several other schools are participating in the Microsoft Select Program. ScholarBuys, a SCICU Business Partner, coordinates both programs between the schools and Microsoft.

To celebrate the launch of the agreement, Microsoft and ScholarBuys invite all SCICU colleges and universities, regardless of membership in the consortium, to an Executive Briefing on November 2, 2010, at Furman University.  The meeting will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Lunch will be served. Those interested in attending must register on-line in the Events section at www.scicu.org.
Number of Business Partners Grow
SCICU's network of providers offering goods and services to the independent higher education community in South Carolina grew by 4 partners in the last month. The Business Partners program provides a convenient marketplace where SCICU-member colleges and universities can preview offerings from some of the top companies in the country.

We proudly recognize and thank the following companies for their support:
