New Presidents

Dr. Colleen Perry Keith                         Dr. Robert L. Wyatt

SCICU welcomes two new college presidents to its ranks on July 1. At Spartanburg Methodist College, Dr. Colleen Perry Keith succeeds Dr. Charlie Teague who retires after serving 12 years as president. Dr. Keith most recently served as executive director of Development at Ohio University in Athens, OH.

In Hartsville, Dr. Robert L. Wyatt replaces Dr. Jim Dawson who served as president of Coker College since 2002. Dr. Wyatt comes to South Carolina from Springfield, MO, where he was dean of the Breech School of Business Administration at Drury University.

We salute Drs. Teague and Dawson for their service and extend our best wishes to Drs. Keith and Wyatt.
Counselor Bus Tour Makes One Last Stop
09 Bus TourDodging thunderstorms and suffering through 100 degree days, 50 school counselors and teachers completed a week's long tour of 10 SCICU colleges and universities today.  The purpose of the tour is to give secondary educators a better understanding of independent higher education in general and more specifically, an in-depth look at 10 unique SCICU campuses. The teachers and counselors will use this information when they return to school this fall and meet with students and parents who are considering higher education opportunities.

This year's tour included visits to Columbia College, Benedict College, Claflin University, Charleston Southern University, Voorhees College, Presbyterian College, Erskine College, Southern Wesleyan University, North Greenville University, and Furman University. Columbia International University hosted the orientation and generously allowed the tour group to park their cars on campus for a week.

Brenda Torrence, SCICU's vice president for business affairs, did an excellent job of coordinating travel arrangements, hotel rooms, meals, and a million other details necessary for a group of 50 to move from one end of the state to another on a very tight schedule.

We are grateful for the hard work and good cheer of this year's volunteer tour guides: Tobe Frierson, associate director of admissions at Erskine College, and Wes Daniels, director of annual giving at Coker College,

Plans are already underway for the 2010 tour to the other half of the SCICU colleges and universities.

2009 Statistical Abstract Released
Bar GraphThis week the 2009 SCICU Statistical Abstract was mailed to members of the SCICU Board of the Trustees, college and university presidents, and key officers at member institutions.  The abstract provides relevant information in the areas of enrollment, tuition, student financial aid, and business affairs. It underscores, in a very tangible way, the important contributions that SCICU's colleges and universities make to the system of higher education in South Carolina.

Eddie Shannon, SCICU's executive vice president, worked with the institutional research directors and the Tuition Grants Commission to revise the data collection and reporting process. Additional copies of the report in either print or electronic format may be obtained by contacting either Eddie Shannon (eddie@scicu.org) or Jennifer Strudwick (jennifer@scicu.org).
Looking for a Few Good Women and Men
When SCICU's fiscal year ends on August 31, eight trustees will complete their second three-year term and will not be eligible for another appointment. To fill the loss of organizational knowledge and leadership, we are seeking nominations to the Board of Trustees for terms of office that begin on September 1, 2009. Candidates should have an appreciation for the important contributions that a strong and vibrant community of independent colleges and universities brings to the state and a willingness to advocate for strengthening the opportunities for students to attend the independent institution of higher learning of their choice.

Nominations may be sent to SCICU President Mike LeFever at mike@scicu.org.

Heading for 100%
With the end of the fiscal year comes a renewed emphasis on achieving 100% giving by members of the SCICU Board of Trustees. The slumping economy has strained the finances of schools and students alike making achieving the goals set by the Development Committee more important than ever.

Board members are encouraged to make their donations or fulfill their commitments by August 31. Contact Eddie Shannon for more details.
