New York's New Senator Stirs Fear Among Immigrants

GillibrandKirsten Gillibrand, who has replaced Hillary Clinton as one of New York's Senators, has raised a lot of criticism and outrage from immigrant rights supporters. According to the New York Times, Ms. Gillibrand has "opposed any sort of amnesty for illegal immigrants, supported deputizing local law enforcement officers to enforce federal immigration laws, spoke out against Gov. Eliot Spitzer's proposal to allow illegal immigrants to have driver's licenses and sought to make English the official language of the United States." New York is famed for its rich immigrant history, so it is not surprising that many have voiced their strong opposition to Ms. Gillibrand. Study Finds Immigrants are Much LESS Likely to Commit Crime
Are you concerned about the media's portrayal of immigrants and their supposed tendency to commit crimes? Well think again. A comprehensive study recently published by the Immigraiton Policy Center reveals that immigrants are in fact much less likely to commit crimes. Here are some interesting facts about crime and its link to immigration:
  • Crime rates are lowest in states with the highest immigration growth rates.
  • From 1999 to 2006, the total crime rate declined 13.6 percent in the 19 highest-immigration states, compared to a 7.1 percent decline in the other 32 states.
  • In 2006, the 10 "high influx" states-those with the most dramatic, recent increases in immigration-had the lowest rates of violent crime and total crime.
  • For every ethnic group, without exception, incarceration rates among young men are lowest for immigrants, even those who are the least educated. This holds true especially for the Mexicans, Salvadorans, and Guatemalans who make up the bulk of the undocumented population

Napolitano Takes Action on Immigration Border Security

womanJanet Napolitano, who is the new Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary issued an action directive on immigration and border security on January 30. The action directive is aimed at getting various government agencies to fix problems in the following areas:
  • The Secure Communities Program and the 287(g) Program-- Napolitano hopes to assess the efficiency of these programs, which allow state and local law enforcement agents to identify and remove unlawfully present aliens involved in criminal activity.
  • The backlogs in immigration benefits-- Napolitano hopes to make progress in the backlogs that have developed in processing naturalization and green card applications.
  • Southbound Gun Smuggling-- Napolitano is urging ICE and Customs and Border Protection to address the growing violence in Mexico's border communities, which has been linked to guns and currency being smuggled south from the U.S.
