Greetings!

I would like to send a special thanks to all of our friends and supporters who helped out in 2009.  As a result of your support and encouragement, the AAFV staff and volunteers accomplished much and helped many last year.

Most of you are familiar with Hope's Door, our shelter for women and children who need a safe place after leaving their own home because of violence and abuse. But did you know that AAFV operates several other programs for families in the Treasure Valley?

AAFV programs include:

  • PAT (Parent as Teachers): A parent education and family support program serving families with home visits using the Born to Learn (R) curriculum.
  • Parent Resource Sites: Offer a range of resources for parents including: books, puzzles, games for children, and general resource guides for parents.
  • Canyon County SART (Sexual Assault Response Team): Developed to coordinate the community's response to sexual assault. This team provides advocacy and support to sexual assault through the health care and justice system.
  • Transitional Housing: Offers housing, utility and childcare assistance to individuals fleeing domestic violence, dating violence, stalking or sexual assault.
  • Southwest Housing: Affordable housing to meet the low-income housing needs of our community.
  • Court Advocacy: Advocates accompany victims and family members to court hearings providing support and information.
  • Court-watch: Monitor court proceedings to encourage victim safety and offender accountability in the court system.
  • Rural Domestic Violence Program: Advocates partner with Parma, Homedale, Marsing, and Wilder Police Departments, Owyhee County Prosecutor's office and other agencies to provide advocacy and services to victims in the rural areas of Southwest Idaho.
  • Hope's Door Thrift Store: Donations are used by residents or clients. Items that cannot be used at Hope's Door are taken to the thrift store. All proceeds from the Thrift store go for operating expenses of Hope's Door.
  • Supervised Visitation and Exchange: A safe and conflict-free environment for children to visit and spend time with a parent or family member.
  • Support Services: Case management, treatment referrals, a variety of educational classes and support groups.
  • Family Education: Trained and certified faciltitators offer classes that include: Men's Healthy Relationships, State Approved Batterer Treatment Program, Anger Management for teens and adults, Parenting, Healthy Relationships for Teens, Setting Healthy Boundaries, Self-Esteem and support groups.
Give us a call if you would like more information about any of our programs and services we offer for the families in our communities throughout the Treasure Valley.

Thank you IBWN for your donations!
News From Hope's Door Shelter
The following letter was written by a resident of Hope's Door Shelter during a self-esteem class. While clients stay at the Hope's Door shelter they are provided with a variety of case management and support services including self-esteem class. In this particular class clients were asked to write what they were thankful for and what they were feeling encouraged about.

"I may not have much, but I am very thankful for what I do have and that's a second chance in life.  If it wasn't for their classes and groups I wouldn't even know me.  I would be just running from myself like I used to be all the time.  I wouldn't know my family and I wouldn't have made this big change in my life.  I know this is only the beginning.  There is so much more to learn about life and myself and if it wasn't for Hope's Door I wouldn't have a safe place to stay and have my kids.  So thank you all so much for guiding me to my second change in life; it means a lot to me and my family."

December Transitional Housing Update
In December the transitional housing program provided 24 women with rental assistance and utilities assistance, eight women with bus tickets, and two women with child care assistance.  In addition to having a bilingual case manager to assist our Spanish-speaking clients, we are currently conducting English as a Second Language (ESL) classes at Caldwell Housing Authority and Parenting Classes in Spanish.  We sponsored three transitional housing families for Christmas and provided Christmas turkeys and food boxes to five additional families.
Literacy on the Road
As parents we are often in the car shuttling children from point A to point B, this errand running time is a great opportunity for learning experiences.

There are several games that your family can play together in the car.  A contest to find the most state license plates can pass the time and spark a great conversation about geography while strengthening literacy skills. This game can also be a fun lesson on state capitals. For smaller children, spotting alphabet letters and numbers on signs and buildings is a great way to learn the ABC's and 123's. Additional activities include learning the colors from the colors of cars and singing nursery songs to help with memory.

Literacy is one of the great challenges for children, and now is the time to build a strong foundation for our children's education.  Use your imagination and the possibilities are endless!
