Greetings!

Christmas day will be here in a few short weeks and I find myself reflecting on the past.

Just yesterday, a friend was commenting on AAFV and Hope's Door's accomplishments over the past few years.  She asked, "How did you do this? What made you believe you could do all this?" The answer I gave her was my standard response - my frustration over a lack of services and support for women and children who have been and are being abused. This was a driving factor, but . . .

Let me take you a little further back.  In February of 1995, I began the process of ending a long and abusive relationship.  Shortly thereafter, my children and I became 'homeless'.  This is very common for women and children who leave an abusive and violent relationship. Christmas of 1995 was filled with loss, doubt and fear. Watching my children go without was one of the most difficult things during that time. We camped out with friends and moved several times until we finally saved up enough to get our own place. Our first apartment was tiny and located over a store. There was no yard for the boys to play in. It was located on a busy, commercial street. Christmas of 1996 was a little better, but it was far from the home and lifestyle I wanted for my children.

Fast forward to Christmas of 2002 - we had a beautiful home, filled with love, warmth and peace. Several times, after the boys were asleep, I would turn off all the lights in the house except the Christmas tree lights. I would sit in the glow of the tree soaking in the love, warmth and peace of our home. It was a good Christmas. It was exactly what I wanted for my children - for myself - for my family.

In Dr. Vincent Kituku's newsletter, Overcoming Buffalos, he said, "Long term reward comes when you do things because you cannot do otherwise. The vision you have relentlessly pulls you to itself. You find yourself in a world unknown to others. You forget time and obstacles and ignore anything said that might stop you from turning your vision into reality." In 1995, my vision was a safe, peaceful and comfortable life for myself and my children. It didn't matter what others said or did around me, I was focused on obtaining my vision for my family.

During Christmas of 2002, my vision changed. I knew there were women and children in my community being abused. I knew that many of these women were homeless because of their choice to leave the abuse. I knew they wanted to give their children a better life. I knew I had to find a way to reach out and help with their journey to safety and peace. This is my vision.

As we approach 2010, my vision of safety and peace for women and children continues to pull me forward.  For the last seven years, I have been blessed to walk and work beside so many who share my vision. I am honored to call you my friend, companion, co-worker, colleague and partner as we overcome obstacles, find opportunities and turn a vision of safety and peace into reality for the women and children around us.

I thank you for your support and encouragement for AAFV/Hope's Door in 2009 and request that you to consider ways to continue supporting our programs in 2010. The need for our services is great, and with your support we will continue to make a difference in the lives of those affected by family violence.

Thank you for your commitment to safety and peace for all,

Fourth Annual Safe and Happy Kids Event
Tisahk boothnker Bell, a zebra, and a gang of vampires were among the many attendees at the Safe and Happy Kids event in Caldwell's Memorial Park on October 31st.  The 4th annual event, hosted by Advocates Against Family Violence, included 24 kid-focused booths and brought out over pumpkin truck450 costumed kids and family members.  Each booth had an activity for the kids to participate in, including Berry Farm pumpkins, signing the Smoke Free racecar, a Caldwell fire engine, and even fish painting.  Volunteers from Deer Flat Refuge quizzsahk banded a princess on local animal felts while she held a tortoise shell in her hand.

A special thank you to all of the organizations who participated in the Safe and Happy Kids Event, we could not have hosted a successful event without yosahk costumeu. We would like to thank the Mayor's Youth Council for volunteering their time for setup, cleanup and booth coordination. A big thank you also goes out to the local exchange students from FLEX for serving food while Identity Crisis played music for the crowd.

2009 Faces of Hope Banquet
Fashion Show
The 2009 Faces of Hope Banquet was very successful. Marty Tadman was the Keynote Speaker and his story of survival and triumph over drugs and alcohol touched many hearts.  We were proud to award Faces of Hope Awards to Lisa Wiggins and one Beverlee Furner. Lisa and Beverlee have both given so much to support the fight against family violence.

We are thrilled to report that this year's banquet recieved twice as many contribtions as our 2008 banquet. Thank you to our supporters, we could not have hosted a successful event without you! We would especially like to thank Hanna McGee, an AAFV / Hope's Door board member who worked extremely hard to make this year's event the best we've hosted.
A special thank you to the event's sponsors (listed below).
