Greetings!   It is hard to believe that school is starting again and fall will be here before you know it.  Isn't there a saying, "Time Marches On"?  Well that certainly seems to be the case around here.

Funding is exceptionally tight - although demand for our services continues to rise.   We have had to make many cutbacks around here due to decreased donations over the last few months.  I personally have not received a paycheck or reimbursement of any expenses for over two months.  I am not the only one.  Several staff members have voluntarily not received a paycheck so that we can continue to keep our doors open and help those that need it.  I don't tell you this for sympathy, but to let you know that here at Hope's Door, our clients come first and if I and other staff members need to go without a paycheck for a few months to ensure that women and children will have a safe, comfortable, peaceful home to come to - then we will go the distance and do just that - in fact, we are doing just that.

Our monthly lease payment on the shelter building was just raised to $4,100 a month.  Our city water bill is over $300 and our other utilities add up to over 1,800 a month.  Our liability insurance alone costs us over $750 a month.  There are many more expenses that are necessary to keep the shelter running smoothly and safely, such as: alarm monitoring, supplies, child care costs, food, repairs and so much more.

Consider for a moment the cost of operating your own home each month and then remember that we have 23 women and 41 children living here right now.  As you can tell by our willingness to go without a paycheck and put the safety of women and children first -  - we are not here for the money - we are committed to the cause of keeping women and children safe.  Now I am asking you to step up and make that same commitment.  We need your help and support today.  Can we count on you? Please take a minute go to www.hopesdoor.org today and give a generous donation to Hope's Door.

Humbly and gratefully,
Brenda Cameron

Hope's Door Thrift Store
502 Main Street
Caldwell, ID 83605

We really need your help with our Thrift Store.  The store was opened to raise desperately needed operating expenses for the shelter.  So far this year, we have barely made ends meet at the store.  Please come in and show your support.  The Thrift Store was opened with three main goals in mind: 1) to raise funds to pay for the day to day operating expenses of the shelter; 2) to provide work experience for the ladies that live at the shelter; 3) to provide vouchers for clothing and other needed items to community members in need.

The Thrift Store is part of our sustainability plan for the shelter - but we need you to get the word out and send customers to the store.  Our store is clean, friendly and has some incredible bargains just waiting for you.  I hope to see you in there very soon.

Hope For the Homeless
Meet Kim
Kim Ivacek is AAFV's new Housing Coordinator. Kim was hired under the Neighborhood Stabilization grant and is an excellent addition to our staff. Her primary focus right now is locating and acquiring property through grant funding that will allow AAFV to offer affordable housing to people that find themselves in the heartbreaking crisis of homelessness.

5th Annual Swing for Hope

Good fun, good food, good folks. And all for a great cause! This year our event was held at the Purple Sage Golf Course and it was an absolutely perfect day for a game of golf.  Thank to everyone who helped make this year's event a success for Hope's Door.

We wish to list our sponsors, with an extra special "thank you" to URS Washington Division. Kelly Head and Deni Hoehne really went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure this tournament was a success.  Due to their efforts, we had over 100 players this year.

No Child Left Behind
nochildleftbehind BE AN INVOLVED PARENT

On January 8, 2002 the No Child Left Behind Act was signed into law.  American public voted on the idea that every child has the right to learn.

There are four basic principles Public Schools must follow through the NCLB act:
  • holding schools accountable for results;
  • giving states and districts flexibility in how they spend federal money;
  • using scientific research to guide classroom practice; and
  • involving parents by giving them information and choices about their children's education.
To insure the first 3 principles of the NCLB are being followed two options are given to the parents.  These two options help provide choices for the parents to ensure that their children are learning to the best of their ability.  These are the two choices provided to the parents. These choices only involve children in a Title 1 school.
  1. Public School Choice: This states that as a parent you may transfer your child to another school if he/she is attending a Title 1 school.  The school needs to have been a Title 1 school for two or more years.  If you qualify your school district may pay for your transfer.
  2. Extra Help with Learning - Supplemental Educational Services: These are free services like tutoring, homework help, or other help outside of the school day.  Your child may be eligible for these services if they go to a Title 1 school that has not made APR (Annual Percentage Rate) for 3 years or longer or is receiving reduced price lunches.
Our goal in providing information on No Child Left Behind is to encourage you, as parents, to be aware of the choices you have and to be a present participant in your child's education.  Please be involved not only with your child in school but be involved with the rules and regulations your school has put in place. Only then can our schools provide the best possible education for our children.

For more information on either of these topics you can contact your child's school district or
The U.S. department of Education, toll-free at 1-800-USA-LEARN.
