 Greetings!
If you have seen me lately, you know that I no longer have my blonde curly hair.  Last month, I decided to get in the swing of things for the Touch 1 Life Fashion Show and went to Studio D Salon in Nampa for a hair make over.  Two hours later, I walked out with a new look.  Now my hair is short, straight and red - yes, red.

Wouldn't it be nice if all the changes in our life were this easy to make? However, most major life changes take months, even years to accomplish.  In the book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen R. Covey wrote, "Change -real change-comes from inside out.  It doesn't come from hacking at the leaves of attitude and behavior with quick fix personality ethic techniques.  It comes from striking at the root-the fabric of our thought, the fundamental, essential paradigms, which give definition to our character and create the lens through which we see the world".

Many of us spend a lot of time looking for a quick fix or a short cut to the change we want to see in our life, our relationship, our family or our career.  This time spent is time wasted - there are no short cuts and quick fixes that will give us the permanent, long lasting change we are looking for.  For those making changes, the road can be long and difficult with many obstacles and set backs.  Sometimes the only thing that keeps us from quitting is the knowledge that someone is there cheering us on, someone who believes in us - even when we don't believe in ourself.  The families we work with have made or are in the process of making major life changes.  Recently, we received a letter from a woman who had made that journey of change.  In it she stated, "My biggest accomplishment was that I went to school and I am now a Medical Assistant.  Sometimes I can hardly believe it myself!  This is another thing I couldn't nor wouldn't have done without the support and encouragement to accomplish this goal.  They (Hope's Door staff) knew I could do it even when I didn't think I could."

At AAFV and Hope's Door, we are committed to helping each individual reach their full potential; to help them see beyond their present circumstances and reach for a better life. As we cheer these women and children along their journey of change - we need you supporting and cheering us on.  Ghandi said, " You must be the change that you want to see in the world".  We may not be able to change the entire world, but we can change 'our' world.  Your donation and your support help do just that - changing our world right here in the Treasure Valley.

2009 Swing for Hope Golf Tournament
Held in Memory of Angie Leon

Fashion Show
In remembrance of Angie and other victims of domestic violence who lost their lives in such a tragic manner...
and also to remember those that are fighting to survive.

Angie was murdered on May 19, 2003 in her home in Nampa, she was shot three times by her estranged husband, and he now serves a life sentence in prison with no parole.

Angie a mother of three, worked a full time job, went to school and when she wasn't working or studying she dedicated all her time to her precious babies whom she loved so much and gave her life for. Angie worked hard to keep her family together, enduring years of abuse so her children could have both parents and live a traditional family life....She realized this would never be and fought to stay alive and give her children a better life.

Today, her children, A.J., Alej and Byanka are living well as Angie would appreciate, but they miss their mommy so much. Having witnessed the events that led to her death, is just unbearable for them at times, which is the reason for our mission... To make a difference and save lives, so no one else will have to experience this tragic loss.  Angie we love you, miss you, and we will never forget.

Supervised Visitation Month
Families of Hope Visitation Center

Orange Ribbon
This program offers a safe and conflict-free environment for children to enjoy visitation or parental exchange in a secure location.  Through the Families of Hope Visitation Center we have worked with 18 families: 36 parents and 30 children over the past year.  Supervised visitation gives families a safe option for a child to see their parent.

May was Supervised Visitation Month and we would like to spread awareness about supervised exchanges and visitations.  If exchanging your children in a parking lot is causing stress and anxiety come to our facility where the family can make the exchange without confrontation.  We believe that visitations or exchanges are already hard enough for the child and want to make each exchange or visitation a confrontation free experience for the child.  We provide bilingual services.

Come visit our facility and spread the word about supervised visitation options.

AAFV Receives Neighborhood Stabilization Grant
News Release from the City of Caldwell

For Rent
Three entities have been conditionally awarded $2.8 million from the Neighborhood Stabilization Program through the Idaho Housing and Finance Association.  The money can be used to acquire foreclosed upon homes in Caldwell, perform any rehabilitation needed and then either rent or resell those homes.  The homes must be purchased from the bank for 15% under the current market value.

Advocates Against Family Violence/Hope's Door has been given over $1.2 million in order to purchase 10 rental homes.  These homes must be rented to people making 50% less than the median income.  We have partnered with New Beginnings Housing for consulting services and assistance with the process.

"There is a huge need for safe, affordable homes for the clients that we work with.  We want to offer alternatives to domestic violence victims and others that qualify so that they do not return to negative and dangerous situations out of  desperation and lack of housing options," said Brenda Cameron, AAFV's Executive Director.
News Release from the City of Caldwell, Maggie Colwell
Transitional Housing helps many.
Grant update

Over the past three years Hope's Door has been able to help 12-15 families each month with their housing and utilities.  We were able do help all of these families through the transitional housing grant which ends in August of this year.  This was a three year grant that began in 2006.  Women fleeing from domestic violence were able to get assistance from this grant to help pay for their rent, utilities and childcare.  We were also able to provide assistance to some women who needed to relocate to another city or state to ensure their safety.  Many of these women would have become homeless without our assistance.

In May we provided housing and utility assistance to 12 ladies and 16 children. Currently three transitional housing clients are in school and nine are working full time.  This grant made a huge impact in many women's lives right here in our own community.

The Transitional Housing grant ends this summer.  We have applied for continued funding, but will not receive news of an award until September or October of 2009.  Without continued funding, this valuable program will come to an end.  Please contact Senator Risch and Senator Crapo to let them know you support our program and the continuance of this valuable funding.
