Giving Makes Us Happier

Social psychologist Elizabeth Dunn of the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada, wanted to find out what kind of spending really does make people happy.  When Dunn's team gave 46 other students envelopes containing a either $5 bill or a $20 bill and told them how to spend it, those who shelled out on others (donating to charity or giving a gift) were happier at the end of the day than those who blew it on themselves (to pay a bill or indulge in a treat).
Dear Friend of NCPF,

We would like to begin by thanking all of the Current NCPF Memberswho have made their contributions for the 2010-11 membership year that runs from July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011. Feel free to visit our website to see if your membership is current! If you do not see your name then JOIN NOW!

You may be asking yourself, "Is NCPF a good steward of donations received?" The answer is absolutely, you just have to look at a few of our accomplishments during the 2009-10 membership year to see:
  • Partnered with the NC Psychoanalytic Society outreach programs such as MindPlay and the Academic Lecture with Dr. Charles Strozier.
  • Granted over $2,500 in awards and scholarships to the recipients of our David Raft Fellowship, Journalism Prize and the Open Sky Aikido
  • Established the Psychoanalytic Loan Fund to support psychoanalytic study through the Psychoanalytic Education Center of the Carolinas.
For a more complete list of our accomplishments click here.

If you choose to contribute $50 or more, not only will you receive membership benefits at your contributing level, but you will also be entered into a raffle for Why School Antibullying Programs Don't Work by Drs. Stuart Twemlow and Frank Sacco (valued at $35). This raffle is June's special offer, don't let it slip away!

Novick event

The NC Psychoanalytic Foundation hosted a fundraising event open to the public on May 21st at Gallary C with guest speakers Kerry Kelly Novick and Jack Novick, PhD. The proceeds from this event, which included a reception, presentation by the Novicks on Building Emotional Muscle in Children followed by raffle drawings, allowed NCPF to raise money for the Lucy Daniels Center for Early Childhood and NCPF outreach programs such as Peaceful Schools-NC.

Watch for more events in the coming months as we continue to expand psychoanalytic ideas into our community.

We accept matching gifts! Make your donation and then as your employer to match your gift. We would be happy to assist you in any way possible in determining if your business offers this service.
Your support is essential, no matter how much or how little you are able to contribute. Here is one final thought...if each person who receives this email contributed $20 we would reach, and better yet exceed, our fundraising goal for this membership year. That would allow us to focus more of our energy supporting our outreach programs! Don't forget to look at the faces of people whose lives we touched last year on our accomplishment page.

Sincerely,

Sarah Stiegler
