David Smith, MD, Chairman of the NC Psychoanalytic Foundation board of directors, is an adult psychiatrist and adult and child psychoanalyst in private practice in Chapel Hill. He is a graduate of the UNC-Duke Psychoanalytic Education Program (previously the Psychoanalytic Institute of the Carolinas and now the Psychoanalytic Education Center of the Carolinas) and the University of Alabama Medical School. Letter from the Chairman of the Board:
What a great year it has been for the Foundation! Despite the current economic times, we have been able to continue to offer world class events like the Back Off Bully Conference and It's My Life: Adapting in Changing Economic Times and launch our new Peaceful Schools-NC initiative. Each has allowed us to remain true to our mission of creating a more resilient community. During this season of thoughtfulness and giving, I encourage you to help us sustain the momentum we have created by making an end of the year gift to the NCPF. We wish you and your families well during this holiday season.
David A. Smith, MD
PS: Looking for a creative holiday gift? We will send a holiday greeting indicating a gift has been made in honor or in memory of a loved one. | |

NCPF Awards Prize to 1st Annual Teen Multimedia Contest Winner
Michael Heubel submits winning submission.
Congratulations to NCPF's first annual multimedia teen contest winner, Michael Heubel, who attend Hanes Middle School in Winston-Salem, NC at the time of submission! He was awarded a $100 gift certificate to Best Buy for his poem titled The Bystander (see poem below).
Thank you to all the students who participated, especially Megan Going from Gravelly Hill Middle School in Hillsborough, NC who received the second prize for her Bullies essay.
Please check our website for details on the 2nd Annual Contest and how you can sponsor this program.
The Bystander
The target is walking down the hallway He is oblivious Behind him stalks the bully The common enemy
Why? Why am I a coward?
The bully throws a punch and the target falls Slowly to his knees Where he lies With his hands over his head
Why? Why am I a coward?
I run closer and join the throng That is circling the fight The bully laughs loudly And kicks the frightened target
Why? Why am I such a coward?
As I stand and watch The bully assaults the helpless form over and over Laughing the whole time Drowning out the cries for help
Why? Why am I such a coward?
The crowd thickens But my tortured conscience Begins to cry in soft tears And I slip away from the crowd
Why? Why am I such a coward?
The noise fades as I walk away But my mind is still screaming A dull ringing of pain As I try to bury the shame
Help us to continue reaching out to children within our community and provide them with an outlet for sharing their perspectives on how bullying affects their daily lives. You can do this by donating to our Peaceful Schools-NC initiative or by becoming a sponsor for the next Multimedia Contest coming up in Spring of 2010! Call us at (919) 847-2323 for more details. |

The complete Dickens masterpiece comes to life! In a culture grown tired of the sound bite, we're seeing attention return to great storytelling traditions, and long before new masters such as JK Rowling, there was Charles Dickens, the greatest serial writer of them all. Edgar's adaptation takes us on a thrilling ride, with humor, fantastic turns of fate, and the rich, emotional moments that make up life's astounding journey. For tickets: Single tickets for the 09-10 season on sale now. For more information call the box office at 919-962-7529. |
