Predictably Irrational 
with Dan Ariely, PhD

Human behavior can be unpredictable even in the most predictable circumstances. This lecture will describe general principles of human irrationality, and will shed light on how these principles can make irrationality predictable and explainable. We will work through some examples and applications of these principles.

Bringing Positive Emotions to the Aid of the Mind and the Economy
with George Vaillant, MD

This lecture will raise the consciousness of the role of positive emotions in combating depression during these adverse economic circumstances. Despite what many of us think, happiness has very little to do with money.
 
Workshop for Mental Health Professionals

Involuntary Coping Mechanisms
with George Vaillant, MD

Are we compelled to repeat the past? This lecture will present examples of everyday crises and apply Freud's concept of unconscious defense mechanisms to them, thus gaining a better understanding of how to reckon with the unconscious forces which influence our lives.

NCPF Board Member on Advisory Board for Talk, Listen, Connect

Dr. Harold KudlerThe North Carolina Psychoanalytic Foundation is honored to highlight one of its former Chairman and current Board Member, Harold Kudler, MD. Dr. Kudler is the coordinator for mental health services for a three-state network of the Department of Veteran Affairs. In addition, he is Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University and an Advanced Candidate in both the Adult and Child programs of the Psychoanalytic Education Center of the Carolinas.  He was a founding member of the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Study Center of North Carolina and is the recipient of multiple awards for teaching including the American Psychoanalytic Association's Edith Sabshin Award for Excellence in Psychoanalytic Teaching. Dr. Kudler is the current chair of the NCPF Development Committee and co-chairs the North Carolina Governor's Focus on Returning Veterans and their Families.

Through Dr. Kudler's efforts, the North Carolina Psychoanalytic Foundation has provided outreach to our state's military families using Sesame Street Workshop's Talk, Listen, Connect programs. Dr. Kudler serves on the Advisory board for the Talk, Listen, Connect initiative project and has presented this program throughout North Carolina. This initiative provides support and offers significant resources for military families with young children experiencing the comings and goings associated with deployment or the return of a parent with visible or invisible injuries including Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury and/or Major Depression.  

On Wednesday, April 1, 2009 UNC-TV (PBS) will air Coming Home: Military Families Cope with Change at 7:30pm (ET) featuring beloved Sesame Street characters Elmo and Rosita along with Queen Latifah and John Mayer. The Talk, Listen, Connect materials are available online at www.sesamestreet.org/tlc so that families everywhere can view the videos and download the information. Families can also find information about the program on www.pbsparents.org.

teen laptopThe North Carolina Psychoanalytic Foundation, along with WriteMore, Family Piano Academy, Papa Johns Pizza and Best Buy, are excited to announce their Teen Multimedia Contest for all middle and high school students currently enrolled in an accredited public, private, parochial, or home school. This contest is an extension of our Peaceful Schools Program, an evidenced based program, promoting a more peaceful learning environment for the children in our community.
 
Keeping in mind that each child has individual interests and talents, we have developed this contest for teens to communicate by the creative medium of their choice. This means they are able to create a podcast, write an essay, create a brochure, or even write a song, to name a few. 
 
teen writingA grand prize will be awarded to the overall contest winner in each division and additional prizes will be presented to overall category winners for Essay, Technology and Creative Design for each the Middle and High school submissions. These winners and their teacher will be invited to attend our Peaceful Schools Program on anti-bullying that will be held on October 24, 2009 and their creative works will be on display.
