Board Members Impacting our Community...

NCPF's Board Chairman, David Smith, MD will join a discussion of mental-health reform with the N.C. Editorial Writers Roundtable at UNC-Chapel Hill. 

Dr. Smith will join distinguished panel speakers Ms. Joanna Forester, Disaster Preparedness and Response Coordinator in the N.C. Division of Mental Health and Joe Morrissey, MD from the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. Dr. Tom Linden will direct the panel discussion that is designed to help opinion leaders see the larger picture in mental health, such as trends in reform, barriers over the past three to four decades, shifts in treatment, etc.  The target audience is mainly editorial writers and columnists from newspapers in the state.

Board Member Highlights
 
The North Carolina Psychoanalytic Foundation is pleased to announce the graduation of two of their Board Members. Terrie Baker, MSW and Jeffrey Chambers, MD have each graduated recently as psychoanalysts through the Psychoanalytic Institute of the Carolinas (current known as the Psychoanalytic Education Center of the Carolinas*)
 
Terrie Baker, MSWTerrie Baker, MSW is a psychoanalyst and clinical social worker in private practice in Chapel Hill, NC, with a focus on psychoanalytic psychotherapy. After a career in a scientific field, she returned to school and in 1996 she earned her MSW from the UNC School of Social Work. She was awarded the Rubin Blanck Award for rising second year clinical social workers in 1996. At the same time, she took the Introductory Course and later completed the Advanced Program through the North Carolina Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Study Center (PPSC*). She is a recent graduate of the Psychoanalytic Institute of the Carolinas (PIC*). Ms. Baker is a member of the AAPCSW since 1996 and served as treasurer for many years. She is the Co-Chair of the North Carolina Chapter of the AAPCSW.  Currently she serves on the Board of the NC Psychoanalytic Foundation and the NC Psychoanalytic Society where she now Chairs the Membership Committee.

Dr. Jeffrey ChambersJeffrey Chambers, M.D. is a psychoanalyst and psychiatrist who practices in Durham and Raleigh. He is a graduate of the Psychoanalytic Institute of the Carolinas (PIC*), The University of Michigan Medical School, and the Duke University Psychiatry residency. He serves on the Board of Directors of the NC Psychoanalytic Foundation and is the Chair of the Foundation's Annual Public Lecture Committee. Dr. Chambers also is past President of the NC Coalition of Mental Health Professionals and Consumers and a current member of the NC Psychoanalytic Society. He and his wife Cheryl are parents of two young adults, Carissa and J.J.

* In 2008 the Psychoanalytic Education Center of the Carolinas was formed through collabrotive efforts of the PPSC and PIC. Students already enrolled in these programs were able to complete their studys through the program they originally enrolled in.

TEEN MULTIMEDIA CONTEST
Deadline March 31, 2009 

teen laptopThe North Carolina Psychoanalytic Foundation, along with WriteMore, Family Piano Academy, Papa Johns Pizza and Best Buy, are excited to announce their Teen Multimedia Contest for all middle and high school students currently enrolled in an accredited public, private, parochial, or home school. This contest is an extension of our Peaceful Schools Program, an evidenced based program, promoting a more peaceful learning environment for the children in our community.
 
Keeping in mind that each child has individual interests and talents, we have developed this contest for teens to communicate by the creative medium of their choice. This means they are able to create a podcast, write an essay, create a brochure, or even write a song, to name a few. 
 
teen writingA grand prize will be awarded to the overall contest winner in each division and additional prizes will be presented to overall category winners for Essay, Technology and Creative Design for each the Middle and High school submissions. These winners and their teacher will be invited to attend our Peaceful Schools Program on anti-bullying that will be held on October 24, 2009 and their creative works will be on display.

Community-Based Support for Military Families
Primetime Special Premiering April 1 at 8 pm ET/ PT on PBS

The
Talk, Listen, Connect initiative provides support and offers significant resources for military families with young children experiencing the effects of deployments, multiple deployments or when a parent returns home changed due to a combat related injury. The materials consist of a bilingual (English/Spanish) multimedia outreach kit with DVDs for children and adults starring the Muppets from Sesame Street, and print materials for children, parents and caregivers and facilitators. Sesame Workshop has produced over 1.3 million kits which are being distributed, at no cost, to individual families, schools, child care programs, family support programs, hospitals and rehabilitation centers and other organizations serving the needs of military families. The Talk, Listen, Connect materials are also available online at www.sesamestreet.org/tlc so that families everywhere can view the videos and download the information. Families can also find information about the program on www.pbsparents.org
.

The North Carolina Psychoanalytic Foundation provides outreach to our state's military families using Sesame Street Workshop's Talk, Listen, Connect programs. NCPF is involved through the efforts of board member, Harold Kudler, MD. Dr. Kudler serves on the Advisory board for this project and has presented this program throughout North Carolina. Jung Society Lecture: The Greening of Psychology: A Jungian Perspective

Presenter and Description: Dennis L. Merritt, Ph.D. is a Zurich trained Jungian analyst with a Ph.D. in Insect Pathology from UC-Berkeley, a leader in the developing field of Jungian ecopsychology, and author of two forthcoming publications, The Dairy Farmer's Guide to the Universe: Jung, Hermes and Ecopsychology and Synchronicity, the I Ching and the Theory of Evolution, along with numerous articles and chapters, including "The Soul of Glacier Country," " Jung and the Greening of Psychology and Education," "A New Approach to Environmental Education," "Jungian Psychology and Science-A Strained Relationship" and his most recent, "Sacred Landscapes, Sacred Seasons: A Jungian Ecopsychological Perspective."
