  • A Special Thanks again to alumni of foster care for your voice and for your participation in the Foster Care Adversity Study! We want to announce that the results of the Foster Care Adversity Study now titled Adverse childhood experiences and psychosocial well-being of women who were in foster care as children has been published in The Permanente Journal, a peer-reviewed journal of medical science, social science in medicine, and medical humanities.

  • A Special Thanks again to alumni of foster care for your voice and for your participation in the Foster Care Adversity Study! As a nurse, an alumna of foster care, and a recent graduate of the nursing science PhD program at the University of Washington, I want to announce that the results of the Foster Care Adversity Study have been accepted for publication in The Permanente Journal, a peer-reviewed journal of medical science, social science in medicine, and medical humanities.

  • A Special Thanks to alumni of foster care for your voice and for your participation in the Foster Care Adversity Study! And a SPECIAL thanks to all those who helped spread the word about the study! Alumni of foster care represented at least 40 different states; they were asked to select which state/s they lived in while they were in foster care. As a nurse, an alumna of foster care, and a doctoral student in the nursing science PhD program at the University of Washington, I want to announce that the Foster Care Adversity Study has officially ended and is now in the data analyses stage.

So far, alumni of Foster Care from 25 different states have participated in the study! Your participation in this study is helping us make a difference today. Together, we can be a voice for those too little to speak, those unable to speak and for those too wounded to speak. As a nurse, an alumna of foster care, and a doctoral student in the nursing science PhD program at the University of Washington, I want to announce that the Foster Care Adversity Study is still running.
  • FOSTER CARE ADVERSITY STUDY
  • Pacific Northwest Alumni of Foster Care (PNAFC) is committed to increasing an awareness of issues important to those in and from foster careto improve the health outcomes of children and young adults. As a nurse, an alumna of foster care, and a doctoral student in the nursing science PhD program at the University of Washington, I am pleased to announce that I am conducting the Foster Care Adversity Research Study. I am also grateful to share that I have recently received the 2011 University of Washington -Tacoma Distinguished Alumni Award based on my scholarly research and advocacy for children in foster care. It is my hope that both these events will positively influence policy and practice at a community, state, and national level, and more importantly, that it will help improve the experiences and health of children in foster care.

We are pleased to share that Developmental Health of Infants and Children Subsequent to Foster Care has recently been published in the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Nursing!

  • Pacific Northwest Alumni of Foster Care (PNAFC) aims to connect the alumni of foster care community and is pleased to introduce Paul Owen, an alumnus, and his recently published memoir titled The Long Winter. This book is an opportunity to share his experiences of foster care to increase an awareness of issues important to our community in our attempt to positively influence policy and practice for those in and from foster care.

  • We want to report that we are hopeful for more opportunities to advocate for those in and from foster care today and in the years to come. As the founder of Pacific Northwest Alumni of Foster Care (PNAFC), I am honored to report that I have been selected as one of three Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) Nursing Fellows at the University of Washington School of Nursing! This funding will allow me to continue forward in our attempt to positively influence policy and practice for those in and from foster care.

We also want to wish everyone a wonderful 2010! Our hope for the Pacific Northwest Alumni of Foster Care (PNAFC) in 2010 is to continue our advocacy work and to appreciate every opportunity already given.

  • We are pleased to announce that Pacific Northwest Alumni of Foster Care (PNAFC) continues to advocate for those in and from foster care at a community, state, and international level. Our advocacy work aims to increase the awareness of issues important to those in and from foster care. I am also excited to share that I have successfully completed my first year of the University of Washington's Nursing Science PhD Program and look forward to further developing my area of interest (health outcomes of those in and from foster care) and partnering with others also interested in improving health outcomes.

  • Since the founding of Pacific Northwest Alumni of Foster Care (PNAFC), I have met so many great people who are the recipient of this newsletter. It has been an honor meeting and working with other advocates and a greater honor yet being able to speak for those too little too speak or those too wounded to speak about foster care. I have also met some amazing alumni of foster care and look forward to building lasting relationships and opportunities to connect.
