them and, when necessary, how we criticize them -- defines us as people
and as Jews. These aspects of life occur throughout each day, and these
are the aspects that the class addresses.
The Secret to Happiness Tuesdays 9:30 - 10:30 am The key to happiness is to appreciate what you have. Sounds simple. So why are so many people unhappy? Join us as we work through the book Gateways to Happiness and learn some practical ways to be more happy. Jewish Philosophy/Kabballah Thursday 9:45 - 10:45 pm A study in a classic book in Jewish philosophy called "The

things expected of us all as a consequence of them. Sounds heavy? It is. But if you like a good philosophical schmooze, this is for you! __________________________ To join one of these exciting classes, call Jeff Surowitz at 248-914-1138 or send Jeff an email.

Meet Your New Teen Program Coordinators Zach Goodwin Alyssa Simko Evan Schwartz
As reported in last month's newsletter, B'nai B'rith Youth Organization (BBYO) and the Ravitz Initiative are now teaming up to bring exciting Jewish teen programs to your town - at no cost! We've hired three outstanding Teen coordinators to provide exciting and engaging programming. So don't be surprised when your teenagers ask you to take you to the bowling alley to meet their new Jewish friends.
Our new coordinators are Zach Goodwin, Alyssa Simko and Evan Schwartz. All three have been very active with Jewish youth groups and their Hillels; their warmth and enthusiasm are infectious. Zach, a recent graduate from U-M and living in the Detroit area, will run the programs in Flint and the Tri-cities. He'll run his first program this coming weekend with Sunday events in both places. Alyssa, a WMU sophmore from the Detroit area, and Evan, a WMU Junior also from Detroit, will be teaming up to run programs for teens all over the western part of the state. They'll begin with a dynamic program in Kalamazoo on 11/23.
We hope to hire a coordinator for the Northern communities soon and have programming running by January. What a great chance for teens to be able to have a positive Jewish experience while having fun with other Jewish youth.

Quick Jewish Joke of the Month
Morry gets into a cab at the airport. The cab driver asks "would you like to hear a joke?" Morry says "sure."
The driver starts, "Two Jews are walking down the street..." Morry
then says "I'm Jewish. Why do you all think that it's funny to pick on Jews in your jokes? Can't you tell a joke about someone else? The driver replies "I'm sorry sir...two Chinese men are walking down the street, on their way to a bar mitzvah when........"

Recent Jewish Events in Your Communities It has been a very busy month already! Here are a few of the great Jewish programs that have been run in your communities:
Tri-Cities, October 19 The Jewish community enjoyed a weekend of music presented by the nationally known group Gemini, who performed in all three synagogues. The weekend of Jewish music finished off with a family concert where kids of all ages performed with the group. Thanks to Kelli Jolly for organizing the entire event!
- Battle Creek, Nov. 2 - The community joined together on a bus for a trip to the Holocaust Memorial Center in Farmington Hills, MI. Julia Gendron and Vicki Horowitz did an outstanding job promoting and organizing the Ravitz Intitiative sponsored event; more than half the community took advantage of the tour. Survivor Michael Weiss shared his powerful story with the group and relayed how he never lost his faith despite the horrors he experienced in the camps.
- Saginaw, Nov. 2 - The community welcomed Roy and Leah Neuberger to discuss their exciting new novel, 20/20 Vision. Frank and Frumeth Polaskey hosted the event. The book tells the the daring and unforgettable journey of a group of Jewish survivors who trek
through the chaos as they pursue their hope of reaching the Land of Israel.
- Kalamazoo, Nov. 9 - Both synagogues joined up to bring the first Jewish book fair to Kalamazoo in years. More than a hundred people perused and purchased from a wide selection of Jewish books, as well as to hear from noted authors
Ellen Kushner - host of NPR's Sound & Spirit - and Keren McGinity - a fellow at U-M's Frankel Center for Judaic Studies. Thanks to Tamara Norman and Ellen Winter for making it happen!

Spotlight on Jackson
With a Jewish population going back to 1842, Jackson is one of the oldest Jewish communities in Michigan - in fact, it
has the oldest Jewish cemetery in continuous use in the state. But Jackson
is more than just a community with a rich history; it is very vibrant today. Temple Beth Israel, Jackson's only synagogue, prides
itself on its consistency, its warmth and its growth. Consistency: The Temple gets a minyan every single week,
without fail, no matter what the weather throws its way. Also, everyone in Jackson knows that election day means Bake
Sale day for TBI; that's when everyone pitches in to cook and bake up a storm
for this great fundraiser. Warmth: One new-mother described how touched she was
when the community joined together to cook her meals when her son was born -
and this was only shortly after she moved to town! Also, the Temple welcomes with open arms Jewish
teenagers at a nearby boarding school to be part of their community. And Growth:
Jackson
is proud to have a slowly growing religious school under the watchful direction
of David Frank, an American-Israeli who makes sure the school is well run. The results are obvious as about one in five
kids in the community went away to Jewish summer camp this last summer - most
using subsidies from the Ravitz Initiative.

Jewish Thought of the Month First impressions are pretty important; you want to say the right thing to set the tone of the relationship. With this in mind, we can learn something fascinating by looking at the first words that G-d chooses to say to the first Jew, Abraham in last week's Torah portion: "Lech Lecha!" "Go for yourself!" The famous 10th century commentator Rashi observes that the word "Lecha" "for yourself" is unnecessary in communicating the basic idea that Abraham should simply "go." Rashi explains that G-d puts this in to tell Abraham that he should go "for his own benefit, for his own good."
In other words, importantly the very first thing that G-d says to the very first Jew is that G-d wants us to enjoy ourselves! I hope you'll heed this important advise and "go and enjoy yourself." Thanks to the hard work of so many of your local leaders, there are now many wonderful Jewish programs happening in your own communities.
