Carriers, Others protest Thailand Dangerous Goods Cargo Rule |
The Maritime Department of Thailand recently introduced a regulation requiring all carriers transporting dangerous goods to and from the South East Asian nation to have insurance covering anyone effected by the loading and discharging of dangerous goods.
Carriers, agents and other concerned parties are vigorously protesting the proposed trade rule, which requires insurance providing advance payment without any proof of fault, among other conditions.
A number of carriers have begun to announce suspensions of bookings of any dangerous goods shipments arriving or departing Thailand ports on and after 11 February, 2011, when the proposed regulation is said to go into effect.
Unconfirmed reports were received today of a 60-day extension to 10 April before enforcement of the trade rule goes into effect.
BDP is actively monitoring the evolving status and potential impacts of the regulation. But we want to be prudent not to share speculative or erroneous information which might cause unnecessary changes to our customers' shipping patterns and supply chains.
Additional advisories will be forthcoming as more verifiable information is available.
