Spring 2012
Hello Friends, Associates and Fellow Art Enthusiasts,

We're back! I've been a bit remiss in keeping up with the newsletter these last few months, but now I'm back on track.

Spring is in the air here (along with every bit of pollen ever produced!). Charles is prepping his plein air supplies, I'm charging the camera batteries and we're looking forward to lots of great things.

Over the last few months we spent a great day with Rembrandt and Charles has had a painting accepted into the 2012 Scottsdale Salon of Fine Art. He's got classes and workshops scheduled through the end of the year and loads of great stuff coming off the easel.

We hope you enjoy these highlights. We welcome your comments and suggestions, and would love to hear from you.

Thank you for your support,
   Heather Walls

Still Life Painting Accepted as Finalist

"Tomatillos and Terracotta" has been accepted into the 2012 Scottsdale Salon of Fine Art.

Although only in its second year, this prestigious exhibition exploded onto the scene last spring amid tremendous buzz. The list of the 155 artists included in this year's show reads like a who's who of the representational art world. From over 1200 painting submissions from across the country, the jurors only accepted 187, and Charles' was one of them!!

Hosted by The Legacy Gallery in Scottsdale AZ, the Scottsdale Salon of Fine Art "will feature the finest in representational figurative, portrait, still life, floral, landscape, interior, wildlife and western themes ... and will utilize the 10,000 sq. ft. upper level of the gallery."

The Salon opens April 20 and will remain in place through May 20. The entire exhibition is now available online on their website.

"Rembrandt in America" Exhibition

Discovering the North Carolina Museum of Art

Over the New Year holiday, Charles and I made our way to the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh to view "Rembrandt in America," touted to be the largest exhibition of Rembrandt paintings ever presented in the U.S.

It was an amazing exhibition and well worth the trip - highly recommended. (If you didn't catch it in Raleigh, it's currently hanging at the Cleveland Museum of Art until May 28, then it will move to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, June 24 - Sept. 16, 2012.)

But while we were there, we also discovered ... the North Carolina Museum of Art! They have a beautiful new building housing a spectacular permanent collection. A sculpture court filled with Rodin is surrounded by sky-lit expansive galleries housing all kinds of treasures, from the monumental 17th century formal portraits by van Dyke to a small gem of a painting by Sargent we had never seen before.

We weren't allowed to photograph the Rembrandts, but some pictures from our day are available on Charles' Facebook page.

Upcoming Painting Workshops
A Deeper Exploration of the Visual Language

We have 2 workshops on the schedule so far this year for the Atlanta area: a beginner's intensive focused on the still-life, and Charles' very popular figure workshop covering the essentials of anatomy and design.

He is offering these weekend workshops as a way to allow artists who can't be a part of his regular classes to be immersed in the in-depth artistic principles which are rarely taught by others and to challenge themselves to more deeply explore the visual language of art.

Ongoing Oil Painting Classes in Atlanta Metro Area

Serious art classes that impart true working knowledge are hard to find this far from New York - don't pass up this opportunity. Charles' aim is to teach the fundamental principles of design and technique utilizing still life and live models, providing participants with a good solid core of knowledge on which to build their own artistic vision.
