Hello Friends, Associates and Fellow Art Enthusiasts,
Spring is in the air here, and everything and everyone is coming out of hibernation! But before we get rolling with all the great things the new year's gonna bring, I thought I'd get you all caught up on Charles' activities during the past fall and winter.

Four exhibitions, three paint-outs, two demonstrations, and one show judging kept us hopping 'till the snow flew. We took the show on the road to Augusta GA as a guest artist of the Westobou Festival, and then traveled to Wilmington NC for the Oil Painters of America Eastern Regional Exhibition's opening weekend.
In January Charles began teaching intermediate and advanced oil painting classes at the Johns Creek Arts Center, in addition to his long-standing classes at the Art School at Binders. We have workshops on the calendar through October 2011, including one at a brand-new venue - ArtWorks Chattanooga. I've taken a lot of photos over the last few months, and in an effort to share them here I've included links to their online albums in several of the articles below. Just look for the camera icon.
We hope you enjoy these highlights. We welcome your comments and suggestions, and would love to hear from you. Thank you for your support, Heather Walls |
Fall Road Trip to Wilmington NC

Oil Painters of America Eastern Regional Exhibition
One of our big events of the past few months would have to be the Oil Painters of America Eastern Regional Exhibition. Charles' still-life painting "Remnant of Empire" was chosen as one of only 98 finalists in this prestigious show. It was hosted this year by the Walls Gallery of Fine Art in Wilmington NC. Close enough to us for a road trip! The opening weekend was scheduled chock-full of painting demonstrations and lectures by OPA Master Signature members and the exhibition itself was full of beautiful art. We met some new friends and re-met some old ones. (We also slipped out a few times to enjoy the beautiful weather!) Dinner Saturday night was on the pier at the Oceanic Restaurant in Wrightsville Beach. Great food, new friends and a chilly ocean breeze wrapped up the weekend. The Walls Gallery still has the complete exhibit available to view on their website, if you're interested. Photos we took during the opening weekend and reception are also available to peruse. |

Paint-Outs Bring Artists Together
Spring is in the air and it's about time to unpack the outdoor painting gear in preparation for the numerous plein air painting opportunities that are sure to sprout up.
Last fall, before Charles stowed his gear away for the winter, we were able to participate in 3 paint-outs hosted by various organizations:
We joined the folks of Plein Air Georgia at Indian Springs State Park in Jackson GA on September 11 for International Plein Air Paint-Out Day.
Mid-October found us at Smith-Gilbert Gardens in Kennesaw GA for their twice yearly paint-out. The trees were starting to turn and the roses were still in bloom - it made for a beautiful 2 days.
The very next weekend we were south of Atlanta in Newnan GA for Oil Painters of America's 2010 Georgia Paint-Out. Every autumn OPA sponsors paint-outs in numerous states. This year 42 Georgia artists gathered at the home of our hostess, oil painter Millie Gosch, to capture the beautiful autumn colors across the rolling hills.
Photos from all three of these outings can be found in albums on Charles' Facebook page: Indian Springs paint-out | Smith-Gilbert Gardens paint-out | OPA paint out.

Invitations to Demonstrate and Judge
This past September Charles was honored to serve as judge for the Southern Heartland Art Guild in Covington GA. The task of choosing the award winners for their annual Artful Harvest Exhibition took the better part of a very enjoyable afternoon. Unfortunately, Charles and I weren't able to attend the opening reception, but a nice write-up with numerous pictures was included in the guild's fall newsletter, available on their website. Congratulations to Terrel Godfrey and Cindy Murphy whose mixed media piece "Wheat Dreams" was awarded best in show. Charles also conducted 2 painting demonstrations in September. The Georgia Art League in Gainesville GA invited Charles to be the featured presenter at their monthly meeting at the Quinlan Visual Arts Center. The very next week Charles and I were in Augusta GA where he gave a 2-part portrait demonstration as the capstone event of Art Experience 2010, the visual art division of Augusta's annual Westobou Festival. His demonstration and talk focused on the beginning steps of his portrait painting process. Loads of thanks go out to Lisa Marks, our lovely demonstration model; Rich Borgotti, our helper and right hand Wednesday night and all day Thursday; Art Experience 2010 organizer LouAnn Zimmerman; and everyone who attended the event at Gallery on the Row in downtown Augusta. Photos from the demonstration and our few days in Augusta have been compiled in an album on Charles' Facebook page. | Portrait demonstration at Gallery on the Row, Augusta GA. |

Still-Life Painting Takes Home First Place Award
|
| National, Regional and Local Exhibitions
This past fall, several of Charles' paintings and drawings were included in four group exhibitions, and two of those paintings received awards:
"Persimmon and Bronze" was awarded First Place at the 4th Annual National Juried Exhibition of the Atlanta Fine Arts League! We were very honored and taken completely by surprise. It was quite a lovely show overall. Pictures from the opening night reception can be viewed in an album on Charles' Facebook page. "Afternoon Practice," Charles' charcoal drawing of a polo pony in action, was presented with an Award of Excellence at the Atlanta Equestrian Exhibition, hosted by The Gallery at Paper Mill Village in Marietta GA. "Remnant of Empire" was chosen as one of only 98 finalists in the Oil Painters of America Eastern Regional Exhibition. Opening weekend festivities took place Oct. 14-17, 2010 at the Walls Gallery-Mayfaire in Wilmington NC. Charles was also one of the featured artists at the Autumn Harvest Exhibition of The Winsor Gallery in McDonough GA. Eleven of his pieces were included. A few photos from the opening reception at The Winsor Gallery are available.

Upcoming Painting Workshops | | A Deeper Exploration of the Visual Language
Charles will be teaching 4 painting workshops in Georgia and Tennessee in the coming months covering the gamut from figure to still-life. He is offering these weekend workshops as a way to allow artists who can't be a part of his regular classes to be immersed in the in-depth artistic principles which are rarely taught by others and to challenge themselves to more deeply explore the visual language of art.
