Hello Friends, Associates and Fellow Art Enthusiasts,
It's been wonderfully busy here these last six months, so much so that I'm having to combine our it-just-didn't-happen-'cause-there-was-no-time Spring newsletter with this, our Summer newsletter here in August.
The first 5 months of this year were filled with full-steam-ahead preparations for Charles' one man show "Transitions." The twenty-seven oil paintings and six drawings will be hanging at the Quinlan Visual Arts Center in Gainesville GA until August 15. Charles counts himself among those artists today who are devoted to portraying the beauty of the world in a beautiful way and this show presents "an openness of spirit" where the act of painting and the imagery itself are one.
Near the end of April, we took a break in our show preparations to hold a 3 1/2 day figure painting workshop south of Atlanta. It was a great success and our calendar soon filled up with four more workshop opportunities through January of next year, the first of which just wrapped up this past weekend.
All of these, combined with his increasingly popular weekly painting classes in Atlanta and an invitation to demonstrate at the Westobou Arts Festival in Augusta this fall, are evidence of Charles' growing reputation in the classroom. Atlanta actress and artists' model Christie Vozniak, who's seen countless artists and art teachers in action, has graciously described Charles as "by far one of the most knowledgeable, engaging artists and one of the most dedicated teachers I know."
We hope you enjoy the highlights included below. We welcome your comments and suggestions, and would love to hear from you. Thank you for your support, Heather Walls |

Portrait Demonstration for a Full House in Gainesville GA
In conjunction with his one man show, the Quinlan Visual Arts Center hosted Charles for a
portrait painting demonstration and talk on the evening of June 24.
Sponsored by a grant from The Arts Council of Gainesville and the
Georgia Council for the Arts, the program was open to the public free of
charge. A wonderful write-up in the Gainesville Times that morning helped pack the main gallery with more than 60 enthusiastic observers.
Charles talked on a variety of topics while he painted over the course
of almost three hours.
The Quinlan's Executive Director Amanda
Kroll was effusive in her comments about the evening:
"You gave so
freely of your time and talent to help us pull off what was undoubtedly
one of our most successful new events in years. I think from a
philosophical approach, you really made an impression with the artists
that attended as well as the art appreciators, and that was exactly what
we were trying to do... I hope that as we look into the future, we can
continue to work with you and to promote you as one of the finest artists
in Georgia..."
An album of photos from the evening is available to view on Charles' Facebook page.

Charles Serves as Exhibition Juror and Judge
Charles was honored to be asked to serve as exhibition juror by two Atlanta-area art groups. At the beginning of the year Charles was juror of Arts Clayton Gallery's 2010 Juried Art Competition. At the opening reception we had the pleasure of meeting Rosalind Webb, whose abstract piece "Stratum" caught and held Charles' eye so well that he chose it as his Juror's Choice Award recipient. Read the wonderful things that Charles had to say about Ms Webb and "Stratum" on his blog. Also earlier this year, Charles was the guest presenter at the February members meeting of Kudzu Art Zone in Norcross GA and gave a well-received talk and oil painting demonstration to a full house. In March, the group asked Charles back to jury and judge their member exhibition "Bursts of Creativity." After 3 hours of debate and deliberation, he had it down to 39 pieces in a variety of mediums and processes. We got to meet many of the artists at the opening reception on April 9. Congratulations to first place winner Carol Luttenburg and the five other award recipients! Photos from the reception can be found on Kudzu Art Zone's Facebook page.

Portrait, Landscape and Still-Life Bring Home Awards
|
| Local, Regional and National Exhibitions
This past spring, five of Charles' paintings were included in three group exhibitions, and three of those paintings received awards:
In February his warm and glowing landscape "A Belle Meade Morning" won one of six unranked Awards of Excellence at the 1st Annual Southeastern Regional Plein Air Exhibition, hosted by The Gallery at Paper Mill Village in Marietta GA.
In March, his stark and exotic still-life painting "Remnant of Empire" won an Honorable Mention at the Atlanta Fine Arts League's Members Exhibition, where the portrait "Takin' it Easy - a Study" and the brand-new "Still-Life with Plums" were also hanging.
And in April, the beautiful and confident "Natasha" was honored with the Helen G. Prince Memorial Award in Springfield MA at the Academic Artists Association's 60th National Exhibition of Contemporary Realism in Art.

The Winsor Gallery Plays the Perfect Host
|
| April 2010 Figure Painting Workshop in McDonough GA
The high ceilings, exposed steel girders and plush leather couches of the Winsor Gallery in downtown McDonough Ga served as a perfect location this past April for "The Essentials of Figure Painting," a 3 1/2 day in-depth workshop focusing on the internal structure of the human figure and the successful translation of that to the canvas. Our tireless workshop assistants Theodore and Chester. | The workshop began with a painting demonstration on Thursday evening. The group of mostly beginning and intermediate painters then had 3 days of work from a live model, and all showed significant improvement over the course of the weekend. Charles is always thrilled when students grow in their artistic understanding and ability! Our model for the weekend, Christie Vozniak, made a wonderfully gracious remark online the next day:
"[I] was privileged to work with painter Charles Young Walls this weekend at the Winsor Gallery. Charles is by far one of the most knowledgeable, engaging artists and one of the most dedicated teachers I know. He incorporates everything from basic technique, to art history and philosophy and even proper posture in his teaching which never fails to inspire major artistic breakthroughs with everyone in his presence."We had a great time over the weekend. The hospitality of the folks at The Winsor Gallery was just wonderful. We are already in talks with them for another workshop early next year. Upcoming Painting Workshops | | A Deeper Exploration of the Visual Language
Due to popular demand, Charles will be teaching 3 painting workshops across North Georgia in the coming months covering the entire gamut from figure and portrait to still-life. He is offering these weekend workshops as a way to allow artists who can't be a part of his regular classes to be immersed in the in-depth artistic principles which are rarely taught by others and to challenge themselves to more deeply explore the visual language of art.
