Hello Friends, Associates and Fellow Art Enthusiasts,
Well here it is January again, and another new year full of possibilities and opportunities stretches out before us. We've been busy here preparing to meet them all head on!
Charles ended 2009 on a high note with his inclusion in Southwest Art magazine's list of 21 of the best emerging artists in the nation over the age of 31.
So far in 2010, we're finalizing plans for two workshops in the Atlanta area - "The Essentials of Figure Painting" - which will carry on the New York style of serious art training that Charles is known for. We'll be bringing the skeleton out of the closet for these, for emphasis will be on the study of the underlying structure and how to bring it to life on the canvas.
Speaking of bringing canvases to life, Charles has cranked up the studio into full production in preparation for his upcoming one man show "Transitions" which will open June 6 at the Quinlan Visual Arts Center in Gainesville GA. As I write this in a cozy corner with a view of the easel, I get to watch another beautiful figurative piece take shape. As Charles' reputation grows, things are getting more exciting around here, and it's full steam ahead!
We hope you enjoy the highlights included below. We welcome your comments and suggestions, and would love to hear from you. Thank you for your support, Heather Walls

Charles Named One of 2009's "21 Over 31"
In the November 2009 issue of Southwest Art magazine Charles was chosen as a finalist in their inaugural "21 Over 31" competition showcasing some of the nation's best emerging artists over the age of 31!
The issue featured Charles' still-life painting "Persimmon and Bronze" along with the work of the 20 other artists included in this select group. The editors of Southwest Art use this competition, along with their "21 Under 31" feature, to bring attention to artists they feel should be closely watched and whose work should be collected by today's fine art connoisseurs.

Charles Serves as Selection Juror

Exhibition Features Georgia Artists
The Arts Clayton Gallery in Jonesboro, Georgia asked Charles to serve as the selection juror for their 2010 Annual Juried Exhibition. We spent a lovely afternoon with gallery director Karen Powers going over the entries and within several hours Charles had it narrowed down to just under 60 finalists - an impressive and solid showing of Georgia artists. Although a separate judges panel will award the ribbons, Charles is allowed one pick for a juror's award. His choice will be announced at the opening reception on Thursday evening, February 4.

Autumn Exhibitions were Widespread
Over the past few months Charles has had paintings included in 4 group juried exhibitions:
The playful portrait "Takin' it Easy - a study" was accepted into the 10th Annual National Juried Exhibition of the American Impressionist Society held at the prestigious Saks Galleries in Denver, Colorado. His stark and exotic still-life "Remnant of Empire" also travelled far afield to the American Artists Professional League's 81st Grand National Exhibition held at the historic Salmagundi Club in New York City, where it was honored with the Raymond Chow Memorial Award. This is the second year in a row that Charles has won an award in this exhibition. Another of Charles' still-life paintings "Study in Blue" was accepted into the Oil Painters of America 2009 Eastern Regional Exhibition of Traditional Oils. This show was a little closer to home, hosted by the Corse Gallery & Atelier in Jacksonville, Florida. The Quinlan Visual Arts Center's 62nd Annual Members Exhibition in Gainesville, Georgia included two of his paintings: the still-life "Persimmon and Bronze" and the multi-figure narrative piece "An Epic in Three Acts."
