Hello Friends, Associates and Fellow Art Enthusiasts,
One day a week or so ago Charles and I looked up from our busy schedules and ... wow, it's October already! The leaves are turning and there's a nip in the air. Great weather for painting outdoors.
We've had a lot going on the last few months, not the least of which was the move to a new and larger studio space. Charles is thoroughly enjoying all his new elbow room, and the bigger canvases that allows. Look for some spectacular new portraits and figure paintings from him in the months to come!
Due to popular demand, Charles will be teaching an intermediate and advanced figure painting class beginning in January 2010. This is in addition to the two ongoing classes he already has on his schedule. We are also planning at least two figure painting workshops for the spring.
And finally, some great news! One of Charles' still-life paintings, "Persimmon and Bronze," has caught the eyes of the editors of Southwest Art magazine. In the upcoming November issue Charles will be included in their list of the 21 best artists in the country over the age of 31!
We hope you enjoy the highlights included below. We welcome your comments and suggestions, and would love to hear from you. Thank you for your support, Heather Walls

Upcoming November Issue Showcases "21 Over 31"
We are thrilled to announce that Charles has been chosen as a finalist in Southwest Art magazine's "21 Over 31" competition!
The upcoming November issue, which will be available on newstands next week, will feature Charles' still-life painting "Persimmon and Bronze" along with the work of the 20 other artists from across the country chosen for this honor. The editors of Southwest Art use this competition, along with their "21 Under 31" feature, to bring attention to artists they feel should be closely watched and whose work should be collected by today's fine art connoisseurs.

Zoo Atlanta Welcomes Area Artists |

Paint-Out Benefits Zoo's Giant Panda Program
On Saturday September 12th, Charles and 25 other area artists met at Zoo Atlanta for a fund-raising paint-out to benefit the zoo's giant panda family and the "Give So They Stay" campaign. The Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art organized the outing and raised over $500 toward the zoo's goal of keeping these endangered animals here in Atlanta.
The weather was beautiful that day and everyone had a great time. Quite a few oil and pastel painters were there, and even a group from a local high school showed up with charcoal and clay. Charles braved the crowds inside the panda house to paint mom panda Lun Lun and her one year old son Xi Lan up close. Earlier that day he painted big sister Mei Lan in her separate outside enclosure.

Summer Exhibitions were Widespread
This summer Charles had paintings in 3 group juried exhibitions:
His enigmatic portrait "Natasha" was accepted into the 67th Annual Exhibition of Audubon Artists Inc., held at the historic Salmagundi Club in New York City.
"Of Wood and Roses" and "Lavender Lace" were juried into the Art Kudos 2009 International Juried Art Exhibition. This was Charles' third year as a finalist in this eclectic online show.
"Melissa" and "Gold Elephant" were included in an exhibition much closer to home - the Atlanta Fine Arts League's 3rd Annual National Juried Exhibition, held at the Roswell Visual Arts Center Gallery in Roswell, GA. And making it even better, "Gold Elephant" was honored with an Exceptional Merit Award at the opening reception.

Georgia Landscapes Hang in the Governor's Office |
|
Two Past Students Honored
For the past several years, the Georgia Governor's Office has played host to artworks by a variety of Georgia artists. This year among the chosen few are two of Charles' past students (and long-time friends) Keith Barnett and Denis Byrd.
Denis' plein air oil painting "High Falls in Autumn" joins three of Keith's landscapes: "Tree Line at Cloudland Canyon," "Creek at High Falls," and "Light through the Leaves." These paintings were submitted to the Governor's Office exhibition by one of our local arts organizations, Arts Clayton. They will hang throughout the Governor's suite at the capital for a year, until the summer of 2010.
Our hearty congratulations go out to Denis and Keith for their beautiful paintings and this great honor shown to them!
