Hello Friends, Associates and Fellow Art Enthusiasts, Whoever came up with the phrase "the lazy days of summer" hadn't seen our calendar - we've been scheduled solid just about every weekend for the past two months! Art functions, family gatherings and even more art functions are keeping us running. Combine all this with Charles' full teaching schedule and it's amazing he has any time left to paint. But, oh, is he painting! I'm really looking forward to showing off the new pieces he's working on, but I guess those will have to wait for our next email.
As I write this I'm sitting in the hushed main gallery of the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art while Charles and 19 other artists draw and sketch from a live model. These get-togethers are only once a month, but they provide a vital opportunity for area artists to get together in a relaxed environment to hone their skills, exchange ideas and recharge from each other's energies. Being part of a group or network of artists seems to be so very important these days.
We hope you enjoy the highlights included below. We welcome your comments and suggestions, and would love to hear from you. Thank you for your support, Heather Walls

Breaking News: Charles Rendered Speechless! |

Surprise Visit from Vasari's Master Paintmaker
Well, the big news from around here these past few months has definately got to be the happenings of April 28th. That afternoon, Charles had the great honor of a personal visit by Steve Salek of Vasari Classic Artists' Oil Colors. Steve and his assistant Joshua were passing through Atlanta on their way home from the New Orleans Jazz Festival and made a special stop to see Charles at Binders just as his painting class was wrapping up. Several students stayed late and got to meet one of the greatest paintmakers living today!
Charles has always been effusive in his praise for Vasari, for he feels that it would be impossible to overstate the quality of their paint. Steve has invested many years into careful and thorough research of the old world, traditional paintmaking methods, but he modestly describes it as just his committment to bringing the best materials to the art of painting. You can read more about Vasari and their visit to Atlanta on our blog.
The bottom line - Steve makes great paint, which helps Charles make great art. We love Vasari and were honored beyond words by their visit.

Plein-Air Paint Out and Seaside Exhibition |

Spring Road Trips Bring Awards
Two weekends this spring saw us on the road. First up to Buford, Georgia for their 3rd Annual Plein Air Paint Out, and then the next weekend on to Hilton Head Island for the opening weekend activities of their 21st National Juried Exhibition.
This was the first year Charles had participated in the Historic Buford Paint-Out. We were joined by 44 other painters in the city's gardens and along the back streets. At the end of the weekend, the exhibition of completed paintings was very well presented by the hosting group, the Tannery Row Artist Colony, and contained quite a few gems. We were thrilled when awards were announced and Charles had won third prize!
Third prize seemed to be in the stars for us that month, because the very next weekend at the Hilton Head Art League's 21st National, Charles' still-life "Persimmon and Bronze" was awarded, you guessed it, third prize! The weather was beautiful for a quick trip to the seaside, but with all the activities planned around the exhibit's opening, we didn't have much time for beachcombing. The opening reception that evening, a critic's luncheon the next day, and a side trip to visit some local galleries and we were back on the road home.

Group Exhibitions Galore
This spring saw Charles' paintings included in 5 group exhibitions. Along with the 2 mentioned above, he had several pieces in the Atlanta Fine Arts League Members Exhibition, held during the months of April and May at the Quinlan Visual Arts Center in Gainesville, Georgia. With 31 participating AFAL members, it was quite a spectacular show, drawing a record crowd at the opening reception.
During the month of May, Charles' still-life painting "Remnant of Empire" was hanging in Springfield, Massachusetts as part of the Academic Artists' Association's 59th National Exhibition of Contemporary Realism in Art.
June then saw the opening reception for Metro Montage IX, the annual juried exhibition of the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art. Charles had two paintings accepted into this show, "An Epic in Three Acts" and "Lavender Lace." During the opening reception, several museum staffers (including the museum director herself) went out of their way to let us know that Charles was the only artist in the show from whom the juror accepted more than one piece! The Metro Montage exhibit will remain up until September 12th; stop by and see it if you find yourself in the area.

Charles Invited as Featured Presenter
The Georgia Art League, based in Gainesville, invited Charles to give a talk and demonstration for their April meeting. He was very well received by the crowd of 40+ in attendance who provided a steady stream of insightful questions and wonderful comments. Many in the group stayed on while Charles continued to paint long after the meeting officially closed!
