Spring 2009
Hello Friends, Associates and Fellow Art Enthusiasts,

Last year when I decided to start a newsletter for Charles, I wasn't quite sure if it was a good idea. Would we have enough news to warrant it? Could I maintain the schedule I'd set for myself? Would people even be all that interested? But here we are at our 4th issue, which finishes out our first year of quarterly updates. We've had wonderful feedback from everyone and I'm looking forward to reporting on more great news in the months to come.

"Remnant of Empire" 16x12, oil on mounted canvas, 2008These last few months, Charles has been very busy at the easel and in the classroom. He just finished up teaching a 5-day workshop at the Carriage House Art Center in Blairsville, Georgia, and he and his work have been spotlighted on the web - on Binders Art Supply's new blog and in a video tour of the Marietta / Cobb Museum of Art.

We hope you enjoy the highlights included below. We welcome your comments and suggestions, and would love to hear from you.

Thank you for your support,
   Heather Walls

Marietta / Cobb Museum of Art
"Sarah Danielle" included in Video Tour
The Marietta / Cobb Museum of Art in Marietta, Georgia has recently launched a beautiful new website just a few months after completing extensive renovations on the interior of their historic building. As part of their re-introduction to the public they created a short video tour of their organization and services, their building and their history.

"Sarah Danielle" included in video tourIt was a very pleasant surprise to see "Sarah Danielle" featured during the voice-over elaborating on the collection and the "important regional and Georgia Artists" whose work one may see on any given visit.

"Sarah Danielle" hung at the Marietta / Cobb Museum of Art last summer as part of Metro Montage VIII. A link to the video is available here.

Charles' classes were recently spotlighted on the new Binders Art Blog.

Binders Art Supply in Atlanta has just recently launched their blog as a fun and informative accompaniment to their retail webpage. Charles has held his classes there for almost two years now and is always full of praise for them as a store and as a wonderful group of people who truly care about the local arts community. They asked Charles if he would provide a statement about his painting classes and teaching method, and he gladly complied.

Carriage House Art Center
Five-Day Workshop a Great Success
During the last week of March, Charles was in Blairsville, Georgia conducting a 5 day long oil painting workshop at the Carriage House Art Center.

Focusing on painting the still-life, the week included two demonstrations which illustrated two separate approaches and plenty of painting time for the students to work on each idea. The importance of composition in the still-life was stressed, especially as it related to the perception of depth and movement within the painting.

By all accounts, the week was a tremendous success. Several of Charles' still-life paintings are currently on display and available for sale at the Carriage House Gallery. Please contact them for more info.

Charles' classes at Binders have been a tremendous success. They are becoming very popular and are filling up with serious artists intent to learn and excited by the process.

Serious art classes that impart true working knowledge are hard to find this far from New York - don't pass up this opportunity. Charles' aim is to teach the fundamental principles of design and technique, providing participants with a good solid core of knowledge on which to build their own artistic vision.
