Winter 2008/2009
Hello Friends, Associates and Fellow Art Enthusiasts,

Welcome to the third issue of our new quarterly newsletter, highlighting the recent news and activities from the fine art studio of Charles Young Walls.

Well, winter is upon us and the festivities of the season have come and gone. We hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday and joins us in looking toward this new year with an enthusiastic and optimistic spirit.

We've got some great things planned out for the coming year and some beautiful new paintings coming off the easel. Over these past few months Charles has had a strong showing at 2 major juried exhibitions, one in Nashville and one in New York City at the historic Salmagundi Club. He'll also be teaching a workshop this spring in the beautiful North Georgia mountains.

We hope you enjoy the highlights included below. We welcome your comments and suggestions, and would love to hear from you.

Thank you for your support,
   Heather Walls
Oil Painters of America Eastern Regional
image of "Natasha""Natasha" Takes People's Choice Award in Nashville
For the second year in a row now, we have felt very proud to have a painting accepted into the OPA Eastern Regional Exhibition of Traditional Oils. It's always been a big deal to get in, but this year it was made much more of a accomplishment by the expansion of the OPA's eastern region, which significantly increased the number of entries. Over 800 painting were submitted, but only 94 were accepted! We were thrilled that "Natasha" made the cut at this year's show, hosted by Richland Fine Art in Nashville, Tennessee.

We were even more thrilled when we found out on the last weekend of the show that "Natasha" had won the Third Place People's Choice Award!

Charles and I made the drive up to Nashville for the opening reception on October 17th and had a wonderful time there and at the OPA-hosted paintout the next day. Photos of the weekend and more juicy tidbits can be had on Charles' blog, if you're of a mind.
American Artists Professional League

The historic Salmagundi Club in New York City played host this past November to the 80th Grand National Exhibition of the American Artists Professional League. Charles' beautiful still-life painting "The Red Cup" not only made it past their stringent selection committee, but was also honored with the Jack Richeson & Co. Award.

The AAPL has strived to advance the cause of fine arts in general, and traditional realism in particular, since 1928. We feel honored the "The Red Cup" was chosen to be a part of that.

Painting - Design and Technique
Oil Painting Class photoOngoing Oil Painting Classes in Atlanta
Charles' classes in Buckhead at The Art School at Binders have been a big success. They are becoming very popular and are filling up with serious artists intent to learn and excited by the process. The recent addition of figure work to the curriculum have the place just humming!

Serious art classes that impart true working knowledge are hard to find this far from New York - don't pass up this opportunity. Charles' aim is to teach the fundamental principles of design and technique, providing participants with a good solid core of knowledge on which to build their own artistic vision.
