Summer 2008
Hello Friends, Associates and Fellow Art Enthusiasts,

Welcome to the first issue of our new quarterly newsletter, highlighting the recent news and activities from the fine art studio of Charles Young Walls.

We've had a lot going on in the studio during the past few months - demonstrations, exhibitions, awards and a mention in a national art magazine! We hope you enjoy the highlights included below. We welcome your comments and suggestions, and would love to hear from you.

Thank you for your support,
   Heather Walls
American Art Collector
American Art Collector 2-page spreadQuoted in a National Art Magazine!
The May 2008 issue of American Art Collector magazine featured an article spotlighting the Oil Painters of America 17th National Juried Exhibition hosted by Dana Gallery in Missoula, Montana. Not only was Charles' painting "Of Wood and Roses" prominently displayed on the opening two-page spread, but he's quoted later on in the article as well!

Exhibiting artist Charles Young Walls hopes his paintings convey a deeper reality, rather then a photographic feel.
"I'm amazed at the quality of realism these days as the standards keep rising. I think of myself primarily as a painter, not of portrait or still life or figure, but simply a painter," says Walls. "I want to continue to learn and grow artistically toward a greater understanding of the language of art. The pursuit of excellence drives me and, I suspect, many other artists whose quality doesn't rest on their past work but with their ongoing explorations into the mystery of life and art."

We were thrilled that the editors chose Charles' painting to illustrate the piece, and used his statements to sum up their article. Our first piece of national press!
Oil Painters of America

Charles was recently named a finalist in two juried exhibitions held by Oil Painters of America: "Gold Elephant" was accepted into their Eastern Regional Exhibition held this past December at the Weatherburn Gallery in Naples, Florida, and "Of Wood and Roses" was accepted into their 17th National Exhibition, currently hanging at Dana Gallery in Missoula, Montana.

Membership into Oil Painters of America is itself juried - the member roles read like a who's who of fine art. To make the cut into these shows is a tremendous accomplishment! The organization hosts three intensely competitive exhibitions per year - two regionals and one national. Within their relatively short 16 year history, Oil Painters of America has become a gathering place for the best artists in the field. They are, as their website declares, "dedicated to the preservation of representational art."

Oil Painting Demonstrations

In recent months, three local arts organizations across North Georgia have played host to Charles and his easel as he demonstrated his painting techniques and spoke on varied aspects of art principles and design.

Last Fall, the Upper School art classes at Lakeview Academy in Gainesville, Georgia were kept informed and entertained for most of an afternoon while Charles lectured and worked on a still-life painting. Their weekly parent email the following week contained this wonderful little blurb:

The Upper School Visual Arts classes had a fantastic painting workshop last week, conducted by guest artist Charles Young Walls. Students, faculty and staff were in attendance to watch and listen to Mr. Walls as he painted and lectured for two and a half hours. Trained at the Art Students League in NY, Walls spoke with witty passion as he lectured on art history, painting fundamentals, and principles of light and space. We are already planning for him to return for another workshop next year.

In January, on back-to-back Monday nights, Charles was invited to give demonstrations at the monthly meetings of the Fayette Society of Fine Art, in Fayette County, Georgia and the Atlanta Artists Center in the Buckhead area of downtown Atlanta. Both evenings saw a packed house, enthusiastic audience and lots of art talk!
Paintings Receive Two Awards

Charles' still-life painting "The Red Cup" was awarded the Arts Unlimited Award for Excellence in Still-Life at the Academic Artists Association's 58th National Exhibition of Contemporary Realism, held this past April and May in Springfield, Massachusetts. This organization, whose motto is "The Enduring Triumph of Realism," dedicates itself to works of classic media in a representational manner. No drips and splatters found here, just lots of great art!

The lovely portrait of "Melissa" won the ArtVentures Group Award at the 43rd annual Central South Art Exhibition National, held by the Tennessee Art League in Nashville, Tennessee. That exhibition will remain up until June 27th at their gallery downtown on Broadway.

Painting - Design and Technique
Oil Painting Workshop photoOngoing Oil Painting Classes in Atlanta
There's been a whole lot of art learning going on recently in Buckhead at The Art School at Binders!

Charles' classes there have been a tremendous success. They are becoming very popular and are filling up with serious artists intent to learn and excited by the process. Tuesdays have the place just humming with art energy.

Serious art classes that impart true working knowledge are hard to find this far from New York - don't pass up this opportunity. Charles' aim is to teach the fundamental principles of design and technique, providing participants with a good solid core of knowledge on which to build their own artistic vision.
