The Long-Term Benefits of Chiropractic Care
By Charles Masarsky, DC, FICC
|
Many patients come in for their initial visit with a clear short-term goal: pain relief. Unfortunately, if that remains their only goal, they miss out on some of the benefits of chiropractic care beyond pain relief. The following patient education article is designed to assist you in discussing long-term goals of chiropractic care. Please feel free to use it on your bulletin board, as a front-desk handout or for lay lectures.
No one thinks it's odd when their dentist recommends regular visits to maintain good oral health for as long as possible, nor do they find it peculiar when their optometrist suggests regular visits to maintain good visual health for as long as possible. And yet many people are puzzled when their doctor of chiropractic recommends regular visits to maintain good spinal health for as long as possible.
"Can you recommend a good Chiropractor?" Of course, when you are suffering with low back pain, neck pain or tension headache, it is completely understandable that you have one overriding goal - stop the pain. However, once this short-term goal has been accomplished, it is time to consider your long-term spinal health goals. In formulating your long-term goals, it is essential to understand that spinal health is about more than getting rid of pain. Spinal health has a long-term impact on every function affected by the spinal nerves, which influence every organ system in your body. Breathing is a good example of a function most people do not associate with spinal health. A case published in the 1980s involved a 53-year-old man with a 20-year history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. More than 14 months after starting chiropractic care, the amount of air he was able to forcibly exhale in one complete breath (a measure called "forced vital capacity") and the amount of air he could move in the first second of that complete breath (called "forced expiratory volume in one second") had both improved substantially (1 liter and 0.3 liters, respectively). This case is part of a growing body of literature indicating that improved spinal health through chiropractic care is often accompanied by improved lung volumes. The long-term implications of the link between chiropractic care and lung volumes cannot be overemphasized. In most adults, even those without pulmonary disease, lung volumes do not improve over time. In fact, lung volumes generally decline with age. Lower than normal lung volumes are associated with shorter lifespans. More specifically, depressed lung volu mes have recently been linked to increased risk of stroke, heart attack, and other potentially life-shortening cardiovascular problems. Conversely, the better your lung volumes, the longer your lifespan is expected to be. Additional biological functions that seem to benefit from improved spinal health include reaction time, balance In the short run, it would be great to get out of pain. Chiropractic care can help most people achieve this short-term goal of spinal health. In the long run, it would be great to retain as much lung capacity, visual acuity, reaction time, balance, and cardiovascular health as possible. Emerging research strongly suggests spinal health has a role to play in these long-term goals as well. Consider this when your doctor of chiropractic recommends regular follow-up visits. |

Sciatica... Exploring Cutting Edge Treatments and Addressing Misconceptions
|
By John Conde
A shocking 80% of all Americans will experience low back pain at some point in their life.
Its epidemic status continues to grow and sufferers seek the most cutting edge approaches to not only ensuring relief but also restoring function. Quite often individuals may also develop associated thigh or lower leg pain termed sciatica.
The clinical term sciatica requires clarification. Sciatica simply means "pain in the leg". It does not mean that the sciatic nerve has been "pinched". In fact, the sciatic nerve is not involved in most cases of thigh or gluteal pain because it does not supply sensation from this area.
What Is The Cause Of Sciatica?
Sciatica can be caused by irritation or trauma to nerve roots within the spinal canal or to peripheral nerves outside of the canal anywhere from the pelvis to the lower leg. Space occupying lesions within the spinal canal such as a bone spur, disc herniation, congenitally narrow canal, infection, metastasis, or mass can be the causative agent. Outside of the canal we find the instigators to be a femur head fracture, incorrectly placed intra-muscular injection, fixation of the sacroiliac joint and primary bone cancer of the pelvis.
The two most common and least diagnosed causes are facet joint syndrome and piriformis contracture. Facet joints help to guide motion of the spine letting us bend forward and back and side to side. They also relieve some of the weight bearing burden of the rest of the spine. Quite often they are irritated due to an injury, arthritis, or misalignment. This irritation produces referred pain into the gluteal region and back of the thigh.
Piriformis contracture occurs when the piriformis muscle tightens and shortens for a prolonged period of time compressing peripheral nerves that provide sensation from the gluteal region and thigh. The tightening can occur due to repetitive use such as is seen in runners and tennis
players, injury, and misalignment of the pelvis. The pain pattern is typically represented as severe buttock pain and mild thigh pain.
How Is It Diagnosed?
A comprehensive neurological and orthopedic examination should be performed checking reflexes, strength, sensation, posture, gait, muscle tone, and evaluating pain production from different positions. X-rays help to narrow down the diagnosis. Further imaging studies such as MRI and CT should only be necessary after a lack of improvement from conservative treatment or a progression of symptoms.
Cutting Edge, Conservative Treatments
The treatment of sciatica is aimed at removing the cause and restoring proper function to the area. Cutting edge maneuvers such as eccentric fast stretching and cross cord inhibition focus on reducing tension in tightened and shortened muscle and joint capsules. Chiropractic manipulations focus on removing the irritation and restoring proper motion in the facet joints. Flexion-distraction therapy helps to reposition some of the herniated material and increase the overall health of the disc. Neurophysiologic rehabilitation of the part of the brain that directly controls the tone of the deep spinal muscles helps to create stability in the spine. Lastly, a proper nutritional assessment should be made to promote an anti-inflammatory diet.

At The Conde Center For Chiropractic Neurology we are proud to have the distinction of being one of only a handful of chiropractic neurology specialty offices in southern Florida. We offer a unique healthcare option for our patients through the use of evidence-based, functional medicine to improve the wellbeing of the neurological and musculoskeletal systems. This approach is completely non-pharmaceutical and non-surgical. We are highly trained in the most advanced, cutting-edge diagnostic and therapeutic applications of brain-based modalities to optimize human performance. The treatment modalities administered by chiropractic neurologists are based upon the understanding that the nervous system and musculoskeletal system are intimately related through stretch and pressure sensitive sensors in the joints and muscles all over the body. Therefore, common musculoskeletal disorders such as back-neck pain, numbness-tingling, strain-sprains, carpal tunnel syndrome, nerve entrapment syndromes, and sports injuries respond quickly and definitively to physical medicine combined with brain-based rehabilitative protocols. Neurological manifestations such as vertigo-dizziness-balance disorders, movement disorders, dystonia, post-stroke deficiencies, closed brain injuries, fibromyalgia, and undiagnosed neurological symptoms respond supremely to brain-based rehabilitative mechanisms due to the
plastic changes that are made in the nervous system. Set up your appointment today! (561) 330-6096
