Greetings!
The Seven Wonders of Water 1. Keeps you Slimmer:Trying to lose weight? Water revs up metabolism and helps you feel full. Replace calorie-laden beverages with water, and drink a glass before meals to help you feel fuller. 2. Boosts Your Energy: Dehydration makes you feel fatigued. Water helps the blood transport oxygen and other essential nutrients to your cells. If you're getting enough water, your heart also doesn't have to works as hard to pump blood throughout your body. 3. Lowers Stress Levels: Seventy to 80% of your brain tissue is water. If you're dehydrated, your body and your mind will be stressed. If you're feeling thirsty, you're already a little dehydrated. To keep stress levels down, keep a glass of water at your desk or tote a sports bottle and sip regularly. 4. Helps Build Muscle Tone: Drinking water helps prevent muscle cramping and lubricates joints in the body. When you're well hydrated, you can exercise longer and stronger without "hitting the wall." 5. Nourishes Your Skin:Fine lines and wrinkles are deeper when you're dehydrated. Water is nature's own beauty cream. Drinking water hydrates skin cells and plumps them up, making your face look younger. It also flushes out impurities and improves circulation and blood flow, leaving your face clean, clear, and glowing. 6. Keeps You Regular: Along with fiber, water is essential to good digestion. Water helps dissolve waste particles and passes them smoothly through your digestive tract. If you're dehydrated, your body absorbs all the water, leaving your colon dry and making it more difficult to pass waste. 7. Reduces Kidney Stones: The rate of painful kidney stones is rising because people -- including children -- aren't drinking enough water. Water dilutes the salts and minerals in your urine that form the solid crystals known as kidney stones. Kidney stones can't form in diluted urine, so reduce your risk with plenty of water! click here to read more about the wonders of water |

How To Fix That "Pain In The Neck "

Neck pain can be, well, a "pain in the neck". It is estimated that 10%
of Americans (that's 30,500,496 people!) are currently suffering from
neck pain. The traditional treatment prescribed by physicians utilizing
pain relievers, muscle relaxants, rest, and possible soft collar
application is no longer the acceptable standard of care as this regimen
only produces symptomatic relief. According to a landmark report
furnished by the Task Force on Neck Pain and its Associated Disorders
(which can be found in the peer reviewed medical journal Spine), some of
the most effective treatments for neck pain include manipulation,
mobilization, massage, and exercise. In addition, cutting-edge research
is exposing the benefits of brain-based therapeutic exercises for the
relief and prevention of neck pain due to the brain's intimate control
of neck muscles. The neck is the most dynamic part of the
spine. Its main functions are to protect the spinal cord, provide the
foundation for the skull, and act as a bridge connecting the skull with
the rest of the body. However, it has to be flexible enough to allow
movement in six different planes. This makes the neck the most
vulnerable region of the spine to injury. It is lined with a high
concentration of compression sensitive sensors (joint mechanoreceptors),
which when triggered provide a high powered stimulation to the brain
which is essential for its health. The small muscles which surround the
neck play a large role in the overall health of the neck. Reflexes
generated in these muscles in response to stretch relay through a
certain part of the brain termed the cerebellum which then fire back to
keep these same muscles strong. As a result, brain-based therapies
geared towards the cerebellum produce amazing results concerning the
overall stability of the neck. The most common neck
complaints involve three distinct structures: the disc, the posterior
joints of the spine also known as the facet joints, and the soft tissue
regions including the ligaments and tendons surrounding the spine. Injury to the discs which are found between the vertebrae and act as
shock absorbers will produce moderate to severe neck pain with
associated pain into the arm and hand. The pain may be relieved
momentarily with elevation of the affected arm over the head. Facet
joint injuries will also manifest as neck and arm pain but may start
without an offensive behavior like a trauma and will typically produce
pain down the outer arm into the hand. Lastly, soft tissue injury will
normally produce localized pain with severe restriction of movement. Nausea and headache may accompany the pain. This is commonly found
after motor vehicle accidents. Many new, advanced
therapies are combining physical medicine such as mobilization
exercises, stretch/strengthening exercises, myofascial release,
traction, decompression, and nutrition with brain-based exercises
targeting the cerebellum region of the brain. This approach not only
focuses on the neck structures themselves but also the regions of the
brain that control the deep intrinsic muscles of the neck producing
greater stability. Stop hurting and start living. Schedule an
appointment today. |

Recipe of the Month Homemade Hummus
Why is hummus so healthy?
Good source of protein: A 1/4 cup serving of hummus contains 6 g of protein, meeting more than 10 percent of your daily value for protein. Replacing your traditional high-saturated fat sources of protein, such as beef and pork, with foods like hummus can reduce your risk of heart disease and diabetes, according to the Linus Pauling Institute.
Good source of fiber: Most Americans do not get enough fiber in their diet, according to the American Dietetic Association. Including more fiber in your diet can lower your risk of heart disease and diabetes and make it easier for you to maintain a healthy weight. A 1/4 cup serving of hummus contains 3.7 g of fiber, meeting 15 percent of your daily value.
Rich in vitamins and minerals: A 1/4 cup serving provides 23 mg of calcium, 1.5 mg of iron, 44 mg of magnesium, 108 mg of phosphorus, 1.13 mg of zinc and 51 micrograms of folate. Calcium and phosphorus support bone health, iron is necessary for oxygen transport in your body, zinc promotes immune health, magnesium aids in the regulation of blood pressure, and folate is needed for the production or red blood cells.

Mind and Body Wellness
The Benefits of Martial Arts
by:R.Conde Chief Instructor Conde Academy
Developed to improve self defense and combatives success, Martial Arts were created in the ancient cultures of Asia. In general, Martial Arts involve fighting techniques, mental discipline, physical exercise and various philosophical components. Meditation and breathing have greatly influenced these Asian Combat Arts and the goal has been to unite the body and mind. Our society has become increasingly interested in these Martial Arts over the last fifty years. We are finally beginning to realize all the wonderful benefits they have to offer.
Many of the physical benefits of training resemble those achieved by other forms of exercise; however the focus is to go beyond the physical training and to gain a deeper understanding of your inner self. The exercises one gets from martial arts training improves balance, coordination, flexibility, stamina and posture.
Numerous studies have been conducted on the effect of martial arts training in producing social and psychological changes. For instance one recent study showed that over a short period of time Aikido students experienced a decrease in anxiety and an increase in self confidence. Another recent study conducted on individuals suffering from chronic back and neck pain showed a dramatic decrease of pain and a strengthening of the muscles around the areas affected.
Martial Arts have been able to stand up to all the scientific tests. They are obviously physically and mentally beneficial. Age has never been an issue. There are individuals in China training at ninety plus years of age. Asian martial arts pick up where Western sports are lacking. They promote a healthy way of life as well as physical and mental development. Overall, studies have verified that properly practiced Martial Arts will bring about positive physical and psychological changes.
In conclusion, Asian martial arts have turned out to be more than just tools that protect the practitioner from an attacker, providing increased physical stamina, confidence, flexibility and mental clarity. Those who invest the time and energy in Martial Arts training will reap rewards for a lifetime.
