Greetings!
What Causes Summer Allergies?
Just as in spring, the biggest summer allergy trigger is pollen -- tiny grains released into the air by male trees, grasses, and weeds for the purpose of fertilizing other plants. When pollen gets into the noses of certain people, they send the immune system into overdrive.
The immune system, mistakenly seeing the pollen as foreign invaders, releases antibodies -- substances that normally identify and go after bacteria, viruses, and other illness-causing organisms. The antibodies attack the allergens, which leads to the release of chemicals called histamines into the blood. Histamines trigger the runny nose, itchy eyes, and other summer allergy symptoms.
Trees are generally done pollinating by late spring, leaving grasses and weeds as the biggest contributors to summer allergies.
One of the most prevalent summer allergy-inducing plants is ragweed, which typically makes its annual appearance in August. Ragweed can travel for hundreds of miles on the wind, so even if it doesn't grow where you live, it can still make you miserable if you're allergic to it.

Help For Those Suffering From Migraine Headaches | |
New Brain Based Techniques
More than 30 million people in the United States suffer from migraine headaches. The onset of migraines typically can occur between the ages of 10 and 40 and diminish substantially after the age of 50, however current studies suggest that migraines can actually occur at any age. Women are twice as likely as men to be affected by this disorder.
WHAT ARE THE CARDINAL SIGNS OF A TRUE MIGRAINE? There are numerous types of migraines, classified according to the unique symptoms produced. The typical presentation of a migraine is a throbbing or pulsating one sided (unilateral) severe headache, lasting 4-72 hours, and often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light (photophobia), and sensitivity to sound (phonophobia). The most common site of head pain is the temple region, extending into the forehead and eye on one side (frontal-temporal). The attack may be so severe that it interferes with daily activities.
WHAT GOES WRONG IN AN ACUTE MIGRAINE EPISODE? Current treatments for migraines are generally unsatisfactory for most patients due to a lack of understanding of basic neurophysiologic concepts concerning migraines. Exciting current research is focusing on a phenomenon termed cortical (brain) spreading depression (CSD) and on dysfunction in brainstem cells that are involved in the control of pain. This groundbreaking concept was originally postulated in 1941, however it is getting more attention due to recent advances in brain imagery. Essentially, brain cells responsible for processing vision, sound, smell, touch, and even movement become very active prior to and during a migraine episode, producing symptoms such as light and sound sensitivities. Auras, a neurological phenomenon experienced 10-20 minutes prior to a migraine involving vision, motor, or speech impairments may also be experienced. It is theorized that this spontaneous activity of brain cells is due an unhealthy state; a lack of oxygen, appropriate food (fuel), and/or consistent stimulation. Simultaneously an area in the brainstem responsible for controlling head and face pain malfunctions, leading to unbearable pain.
NEW BRAIN-BASED TREATMENT: How can this information help those who suffer from migraines? Our current understanding allows us to develop a treatment plan that is multi-factorial in nature addressing the oxygen deficiencies, inappropriate nutrition, and lack of stimulation. Graded aerobic activity, oxygen supplementation, and prescribed breathing exercises aimed at increasing vital capacity are essential to allow for greater oxygenation. Chiropractic adjustments of the thorax allows for increased rib excursion and greater oxygen intake. One should attempt to eliminate or reduce alcohol (red wine), caffeine, monosodium glutamate (MSG; found in some ethnic foods), nitrates (processed foods such as cold cuts and hot dogs), hunger episodes, and lack of sleep. Some nutritional supplements that may be of value are L-arginine, magnesium, and 5-hydroxytryptophan. Specific brain-based exercises such as eye movement activities (oculomotoric rehabilitation), vestibular activities (inner ear), brain-balance auditory stimulation, visual stimulation, olfactory stimulation, and chiropractic adjustments are essential in stabilizing these clusters of unhealthy cell in our nervous system.

Question of the Month | |
What is the Unlimited Potential Program?
The Unlimited Potential Program is a unique, brain-based approach for enhancing neuro-cognitive function and addressing learning/behavioral disorders such as AD/HD, autism, Asperger's, dyslexia, Tourettes, and auditory processing problems. This program is also highly beneficial for parents and children seeking to improve brain-based learning strategies at home or in the classroom.
The program seeks to promote permanent neurological changes through the neurological principle of plasticity, which states that the brain can change according to the environmental influences surrounding it. The underlying premise of the program is based on cutting-edge, groundbreaking research concerning the hemispheric dysfunction seen in the brain of children with learning/behavioral disorders. In essence, we now know that there seems to be an under-functioning side of the brain in these children which involves primarily the right hemisphere in an area termed the frontal lobe. This dysfunction is termed hemisphericity. The faculties this part of the brain is responsible for include filtering or stopping thoughts, planning, problem solving, social or "how to play knowledge", the control of core musculature, and sequencing to name a few. After a comprehensive neurological examination, academic achievement test (WIATII), and behavioral questionnaire (CBCL) a better understanding of the dysfunctional brain regions is ascertained. An exclusive customized treatment plan is then followed leading the way to permanent neurological change. Therapeutic procedures include specific oculomotor (eye tracking) exercises, hemisphere specific core exercises, interactive metronome, therapeutic use of light, therapeutic use of sound, therapeutic use of smell, vestibular training, hemisphere specific academic exercises, and a nutritional assessment.

Recipe of the Month | |
Tilapia with Escarole and Lemon Pepper Oil
 | Click above to see the recipe |
Tilapia contains a good amount of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Consumption of these types of fatty acids is thought to be associated with reduction in blood pressure and reduced risk for certain cancers, inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, and even mental decline. You may not have heard so much about a second ingredient they contain, omega-6 fatty acids. Like omega-3s, these are polyunsaturated and help lower blood cholesterol levels, however they are thought to play a role in clotting function, are inflammatory and susceptible to oxidation - thereby possibly increasing risk for blood clots, arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease and cancers.

If for some reason it is necessary to discontinue strength/resistance training, one result is certain. In the absence of a strength stimulus the muscles gradually become smaller and weaker (atrophy). Although the rate of decrease may vary among individuals strength loss occurs at about one-half the rate of strength gain, usually within 72 hours.
Because eating habits tend to remain rather consistent, calories that were previously utilized during strength workouts are not stored as fat. Less muscle mass, results in a lower metabolic rate, further reducing calorie use and increasing fat stores. Even with careful attention to a healthy, nutritional diet, program discontinuation will be followed by simultaneous muscle loss and fat gain and a disappointing change in body composition physical capacity and personal appearance.
Those who use the standard scale to assume optimal health showing the pounds perhaps dropping or staying the same, are sadly mistaken. Without strength training even if the scale is showing a loss in pounds or staying the same, it is actually muscle that one is losing and gaining fat instead.
Weight loss does not reduce the number of fat cells. You think you have lost 10 or 20 pounds of fat cells for good. Think again! While you might have shrunk the cells, you did not get rid of them. They lie dormant and will expand again if you overeat, eat unhealthy foods or stop exercising.
Researchers at the Karonlinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden found that people keep the same number of fat cells throughout their life and that fat cell number is fixed during childhood through diet and exercise.
More important, the body destroys and grows new fat cells continuously. Every year the body turns over about 10 percent of the fat cells. Also, while you cannot get rid of fat cells, you can create new ones by not exercising and eating unhealthy. Fat cells fill with fat to a certain level and trigger the development of new fat cells that also stays with you for life.
The key is to change one's lifestyle permanently. Eating healthy and wisely and incorporating exercise into your daily lives. Exercise meaning: cardiovascular training, strength/resistance and flexibility training.
To optimal health, fitness and wellness always, Kim.
