Ab Crunches5 Steps to Optimum Joint Health
Inevitably, we will all grow older.  Unfortunately, in our society we equate aging with a substandard quality of life filled with aches and pains.  The aging process is a beautiful phenomenon that should be celebrated.  It is a compilation of years of experiences and memories.  It is a time in our lives where we should be feeling great and truly enjoying our families and our hobbies.  Although there is no cure for arthritis, there are some simple ways to slow its progression and increase the function of our joints to allow for better motion and less pain.  These strategies can also be applied to individuals without arthritis and pain seeking to get the most out of there joints.

Here are my Top Five Tips for Joint Health:

  1. Proper Joint Motion- Pathomechanics or improper joint motion can lead to wear and tear and eventually arthritis.  If a joint is out of its proper alignment, abnormal stresses are placed on the joint leaving the joint susceptible to arthritis.  Additionally, the joints are lined with sensors called mechanoreceptors.  These sensors send stimulatory signals to the brain which help keep the brain viable and healthy.  With a misalignment, these sensors are no longer activated and the stimulatory signals are no longer propagated to the brain.  Chiropractic Physicians locate these faulty joints and restore them to their proper position.
  2. Proper Nutrition- Intake more raw fruits and vegetables.  Reduce or eliminate fried foods and red meat.  Choose foods that are lower on the glycemic index.  Coconut and olive oil are better than corn oil.  Do not forget your protein.  Cold water fish such as salmon, cod, and herring are excellent sources of essential fatty acids.  Blueberries are the most nutrient filled foods on the market.  All of these small changes in the diet will push our bodies toward an anti-inflammatory state and help support the connective tissue make up of our joints.
  3. Proper Supplementation- Glucosamine sulfate, chondroitin sulfate, and MSM.  These supplements help to grow the cartilaginous portions of our joints.  Anti-oxidant vitamins such as A, C, E, and selenium protect against free radical damage.  Essential fatty acids such as Omega-3 or its derivatives EPA and DHA help to reduce inflammation.  Manganese is essential for the growth and repair of ligaments and tendons.
  4. Hydration- At least eight, 8 ounce glasses of water per day.
  5. Regular Exercise- For adults, moderate intensity physical activity for at least 30 minutes for 5 or more days a week is recommended.  You should feel like you are breathing a little heavier than usual and that your heart rate has increased.  You may also sweat lightly.  For seniors, the same is recommended with a frequency of 3-5 days a week.  If you are not regularly active, start with only 10 minute sessions.  Always remember to warm up, cool down, and stretch.  Choose exercises that require various angles of movement.  These include yoga, Pilates, water aerobics, recreational tennis, and elevated treadmill work.  You can also increase the difficulty of any exercise routine by applying a challenge to the balance systems of the body such as standing on an uneven surface when weight training.  Working various angles of a joint help to strengthen all the corresponding muscles, tendons, and ligaments to give greater stability to the movement.
Question of the Month:

What is the Unlimited Potential Program?

The Unlimited Potential Program is a unique, brain-based approach for enhancing neuro-cognitive function and addressing learning/behavioral disorders such as AD/HD, autism, Asperger's, dyslexia, Tourettes, and auditory processing problems. This program is also highly beneficial for parents and children seeking to improve brain-based learning strategies at home or in the classroom. The program seeks to promote permanent neurological changes through the neurological principle of plasticity, which states that the brain can change according to the environmental influences surrounding it. The underlying premise of the program is based on cutting-edge, groundbreaking research concerning the hemispheric dysfunction seen in the brain of children with learning/behavioral disorders. In essence, we now know that there seems to be an under-functioning side of the brain in these children which involves primarily the right hemisphere in an area termed the frontal lobe. This dysfunction is termed hemisphericity. The faculties this part of the brain is responsible for include filtering or stopping thoughts, planning, problem solving, social or "how to play knowledge", the control of core musculature, and sequencing to name a few. After a comprehensive neurological examination, academic achievement test (WIATII), and behavioral questionnaire (CBCL) a better understanding of the dysfunctional brain regions is ascertained. An exclusive customized treatment plan is then followed leading the way to permanent neurological change. Therapeutic procedures include specific oculomotor (eye tracking) exercises, hemisphere specific core exercises, interactive metronome, therapeutic use of light, therapeutic use of sound, therapeutic use of smell, vestibular training, hemisphere specific academic exercises, and a nutritional assessment.

Brain Teaser of the Month:
Here's a puzzle to test your ability to find a pattern and test it against more data.
In this table, each row across follows the same pattern of numbers. See if you can discern the pattern and fill in the missing number in the bottom row. For added challenge (or competition), time how long it takes you to complete the puzzle. Then, pass it along to someone else and see if they can solve it faster. The slower one has to cook dinner!

Number Table

Executive functions, like planning, and spatial processing are handled by your frontal lobes.
Have you solved it yet? If not, here's a hint:
If you read your figures like words in the West,
then multiply your efforts and subtract the rest.
Keep reading for the answer and solution.
(7×4)-8 = 20
(3×9)-7 = 20
(3x8)-4 = 20
The answer is 3
