Myth: Chiropractic isn't safe.
Fact:  In the words of an independent New Zealand government survey, chiropractic care is remarkably safe.  Since chiropractic care doesn't add foreign substances to your body like drugs do and doesn't take away anything from you like surgery does, it's very safe.  Chiropractic Care merely helps to restore the natural function and structure of your spine to relieve irritation to the nervous system.  This makes Chiropractic care safer than back surgery, safer than taking aspirin, and even safer than driving your car to the grocery store!

September is known to have been the seventh month of the Roman calendar. The name is said to derive from 'Septem' the Roman word for 'seven', so the name literally means the 'seventh month' as the year used to begin in March (although it is now the ninth month of the Gregorian). As part of the seasonal calendar September is the time of the Harvest Moon according to Pagan beliefs and the 'Moon of the Black Cherries' or 'Moon when the Calves Grow Red Hair' by the Lakota Sioux.

AHA LogoFocus on Your Child's Health
You may notice that your child's one shoulder or hip is higher than the other, or maybe that she walks with her head tilted to the side.  Can this be a sign of scoliosis?  How would you know?

Scoliosis is difficult to detect and the child rarely complains of any pain.  It usually occurs during periods of growth spurts between the ages of 10 and 15.  Girls are affected more often than boys.

The easiest way to detect scoliosis is by using the forward bend test.  The child bends forward from the waist, with arms dangling.  Scoliosis appears as an abnormal or exaggerated "S" or "C" curve in the spine, which is measured in terms of degrees of curvature.  Spinal curves that are less than 10 degrees are common.  Scoliosis is diagnosed when the spinal curve is greater than 10 degrees.

Chiropractic care appears to offer tremendous potential in the management and ongoing monitoring of scoliosis, particularly in its early stages.  Bring your child in today for a thorough scoliosis screening.

Top Ten Reasons Not to Eat Sugar!
According to a recent USDA study, the average American consumes the equivalent of 53 heaping teaspoons of white refined sugar a day.  (A typical 12-ounce cola contains the equivalent of 9 heaping teaspoons of sugar.)  While we always hear about doing things in moderation, this certainly does not apply to sugar intake!  Here are the top ten reasons to avoid refined (white) sugar in your diet:

1.  Sugar causes tooth decay because it decreases the effectiveness of a particular type of white blood cell that "eats" bacteria.
2.  Sugar causes the body to release more adrenaline, which may explain hyperactivity in young children.
3.  Calcium loss in urine occurs when a person consumes a soft drink containing sugar.
4.  Ingesting sugar makes the pancreas work harder to produce insulin.  Diabetes results when the overworked pancreas can no longer eliminate sugar from the bloodstream.
5.  White sugar is bleached with chlorine, which can convert to dioxin, a lethal compound.
6.  Sugar can hinder weight loss because high insulin levels (see #4) cause the body to store excess carbohydrates as fat.
7.  Sugar increases the likelihood of chronic fatigue.
8.  Sugar increase mood swings, irritability and anxiety.
9.  Sugar compromises the immune system, lowering the efficiency of white blood cells for at least five hours.
10. Eating sugar can decrease helpful high-density cholesterol (HDL) and increase bad (LDL) cholesterol.

Planking ExerciseExercise of the Month:
Planking

The plank exercise  is a great way to build endurance in both the abs and back, as well as stabilizer muscles. Lie with legs extended, feet together.  Rest your forearms on the floor, shoulder-width apart, with hands flat, or fists facing each other.  Pull your abdominal muscles in tight and lift hips so your body forms a line from shoulders to heels, as shown.  Hold as long as you can with good form, working up to 60 seconds (60 seconds = one rep). Do three reps three times a week.

  • Don't let your bottom pop up.  That's cheating.  Keep your body in a straight line, from shoulders to heels.
  • Don't let your hips droop or your chest sink toward the floor; this will strain your back.
  • Don't forget about cardio--burning fat is the best way to reveal newly toned muscles!

AHA LogoBrain Exercise of the Month:                         Novelizing Your Brain

Create new connections in your brain!  Take a new route to work (or home), shop at a different grocery store, sleep on the other side of the bed, even take a trip to a foreign country.  These activities foster new synaptic connections in your brain allowing for more efficient brain activity.

Make This Tonight-Lively Lentil Soup

Lentil Soup
Here is a great lentil soup recipe that includes of the best brain foods, kale.
Though greens in general are nutritious foods, kale stands a head above the rest. Not only is it one of your best sources of beta-carotene, one of the antioxidants believed by many nutrition experts to be a major player in the battle against cancer, heart disease, and certain age-related chronic diseases, it also provides other important nutrients. According to recent research results, kale is an incredible source of well-absorbed calcium, which is one of the many factors that may help prevent osteoporosis. It also provides decent amounts of vitamin C, folic acid, vitamin B6, manganese, and potassium. The manganese in kale helps your body's own antioxidant defense system, superoxide dismutase, protecting you from damaging free radicals. Its folate and B6 team up to keep homocysteine levels down, which may help prevent heart disease, dementia, and osteoporosis bone fractures. Lentils, a small but nutritionally mighty member of the legume family, are a very good source of cholesterol-lowering fiber. Not only do lentils help lower cholesterol, they are of special benefit in managing blood-sugar disorders since their high fiber content prevents blood sugar levels from rising rapidly after a meal. But this is far from all lentils have to offer. Lentils also provide good to excellent amounts of six important minerals, two B-vitamins, and protein-all with virtually no fat. The calorie cost of all this nutrition? Just 230 calories for a whole cup of cooked lentils. This tiny nutritional giant fills you up--not out.  So make this recipe tonight and

2 cups black beluga lentils (or green French lentils), picked over and rinsed
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
1 large onion, chopped
1 teaspoon fine-grain sea salt
1 28-ounce can crushed tomatoes
2 cups water
3 cups of  kale (or a big leafy green like chard), rinsed well, deveined, finely chopped

1. Bring 6 cups of water to a boil in a large saucepan, add the lentils, and cook for about 20 minutes, or until tender.  Drain and set aside.
2. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a heavy soup pot over medium heat, then add the onion and salt and saute until tender, a couple minutes. Stir in the tomatoes, lentils, and water and continue cooking for a few more minutes, letting the soup come back up to a simmer. Stir in the chopped greens, and wait another minute. Taste and adjust the seasoning if need be. Ladle into bowls, and serve with a drizzle of olive oil.
Serves 6 to 8.
