Healthy Snacks, Fast?!
by Jennifer Mulchandani, Mom Made Director of Marketing
Jennifer Family Pic
I know a little something about hungry kids.  I have three of them.  You probably deal with it too: the grumpiness, the claims of imminent demise, and the overall stress that hunger causes!

Kid #1 (age 7): Comes off the bus with a growl and says that he has no energy.  Kids #2 (age 5): Too distracted after preschool with play and then suddenly realizes he's starving and can't speak another word 'till he's fed!  Kid #3 (age 18 mos): A constant grazer, who can't pass the kitchen without demanding to look in the fridge or pantry in search of the next snack!

So how do we busy parents prepare for these (predictable) emergency feeding moments?  I have learned that the best defense if offense:
  • Keep a list of healthy snacks that each kid likes on the fridge.
  • Keep ingredients to support that list in the house.
  • Plan ahead, prep the snacks when you are packing school lunches or making lunch at home.
  • Keep to a food routine, and offer snacks at a predictable time each day.
  • Give children appropriate choices, but be firm that you are in charge of what is offered.
Here are my (picky) kids' favorites:
  • Apple slices with peanut butter for dipping
  • Apple slices with cinnamon sprinkled on top (this hides discoloration of the apples, too!)
  • Banana slathered with peanut butter
  • Toast with jam
  • Cereal with milk
  • Carrot sticks with dressing for dipping
  • Whole wheat crackers and hummus
  • Cucumbers
  • Mom Made Cheese Pizza Munchies
  • Popcorn (homemade!)
  • Yogurt Smoothies

I'd love to know your favorite healthy snack strategies and ideas too!  Please send me feedback and I'll include it in our next newsletter!

From the Mom Made® family to yours, bon appétit!
