Letter from the President

I was reminded recently - once again - of just how fortunate I am. My eldest daughter, Beth, is currently serving in the Peace Corp, and she is posted to a small town called Palestina de los Altos, in the Western Highlands of Guatemala. She is a health education worker there, teaching the residents about hygiene and disease prevention and, on the side, teaching about twenty young children to speak English. From the time Beth first applied to the Peace Corp, I have been so proud of her that I often have trouble containing it.

My wife and I took a two-week vacation earlier this month to visit Beth for the first time since her posting a year and a half ago, and she had planned a wonderful itinerary for us all (She was able to take some vacation time and accompany us for the whole trip.). We saw some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen, and met some of the warmest people I have ever known. Many of them had little but the clothes on their backs and a small adobe shelter, with cold running water and perhaps a light. When it got cold at night - and it did, even in August, at 9,000 feet elevation - they would pull another blanket around themselves because they had no heat.

With as little as these people had, in the way of possessions, they didn't seem or act impoverished - after all, they were seeing to it that their children learned a new language, and creating the most beautiful, brightly-colored fabrics I have ever seen. And they couldn't wait to tell me - in front of Beth - how much they appreciate and value her, even though none of them had ever said that to Beth before. She was blown away by all the nice things her Guatemalan friends would say to us about her.

International travel almost always makes us more thankful for what we have. And it will be a long time before I take for granted ice in drinks, well-paved roads, working thermostats. But what made me feel most fortunate was the knowledge that I am the father of a young woman who has learned the value of service. Of helping others. Of being part of something bigger than herself. That whole pride thing is still the best part of being a parent...

Warren County United Way Announces New Executive Director

Warren County United Way is pleased to announce that Aaron A. Reid has accepted the position of Executive Director.  Mr. Reid has worked for the United Way of the Lower Eastern Shore in Salisbury, Maryland since 2006 most recently in the position of Assistant Director.

He comes to the Warren County United Way with extensive administrative skills and experience and a passion for public service.  In addition to United Way experience, Aaron has held leadership positions with the National MS Society-Maryland Chapter and The Salvation Army of Greater Columbus, Ohio.  Mr. Reid will join the Warren County United Way staff August 15th.

In looking forward to his new role Reid said, "It is truly an honor to be selected to serve as the Executive Director of the Warren County United Way and I look forward to working with the entire community in continuing to expand the tremendous impact of this important organization."

The hiring of Reid marks the end of a three-month search to fill the position after the nonprofit's former executive director, Michael Schepers, resigned in April.

"Our Search Committee conducted a wide-ranging and comprehensive search to fill this vital position and did an outstanding job in leading us to Mr. Reid," said Matt Layer, President of the Warren County United Way Board.  "The Board of Directors believe that Aaron has skills that will complement an already dedicated and qualified staff."  Layer continued, "We believe that Aaron's strengths will allow him to understand the challenges facing our communities and that he will develop the necessary partnerships, coalitions and programs to fulfill the mission of WCUW."

Mr. Reid holds an undergraduate degree from Florida Atlantic University and a Masters degree from the University of Maryland.

Before moving to Maryland, Reid was a life-long resident of Ohio.  Mr. Reid and his family are excited to be moving back "home."  Reid is looking forward to meeting the staff, board of directors, agency heads and the community.

Golf United Classic

Once again, Kudos go out to Paul Clark with Nationwide and his volunteer team for producing another SOLD OUT and SUCCESSFUL Golf outing. This year's Golf United event raised over $24,000 for programs funded by Butler County United Way.

$20,000 Hole in One Opportunity

Golfers also had the opportunity to shoot a Hole in One for $20,000. One player came very close but the spirit and reason for coming out remained positive.
