| Community Launch on September 11, 2010 | Save the date: September 11th, 2010. Join us at the Community Launch that will showcase the 2010 Campaign Kickoff and introduce 2010 Campaign Chair Dave Lippert, President/CEO of Hamilton Caster at the Campaign Kickoff Breakfast. Following the breakfast you can choose to either volunteer your "Hands" at the Fall Day of Caring or with your "Head" by participating in the Youth Summit Roundtable discussions. For more information and to register, visit www.bc-unitedway.org.
The 2010 Fall Day of Caring is from 10am-4pm. Volunteers will enjoy the opportunity to lend their hands to help local community agencies complete tasks that they could not do otherwise. Such opportunities include:
· Painting · minor gardening and landscaping · home repair
September 11th is the nation's second official National Day of Service and Remembrance. While you remember the heroes of this country you will also help local residents become self-sufficient and help youth grow into successful adults.
If you would rather spend your time volunteering with your "head", then participate in Butler County United Way's second Youth Impact Council Summit from 10am-12pm. Your insights will help us chart the Impact Road Map that will support our local youth to grow into successful adults. |
| Another Class Graduates | At the end of July, 13 community members graduated from the 15 week "Getting Ahead" program. The "Getting Ahead" program is part of Bridge Coalition which works with low-income residents and teaches them the skills to be self-sufficient.
The next step in the graduates' success is you, the mentor.
Mentor responsibilities: 1. Be intentional about fostering a friendship with a Getting Ahead graduate. 2. Provide a supportive relationship to an individual as he/she begins the transition out of poverty. 3. Be aware of one's own biases and the psychology of different classes. Be willing to set such biases aside. 4. Advocate within the community to address systematic barriers that currently holds poverty in place. 5. Must be at least 18 years of age. If you are interested in becoming a mentor visit: www.bc-unitedway.org, click on VOLUNTEER, and search for "Bridges Out of Poverty", or contact Abbey Sullivan, Bridges Out of Poverty Coordinator at 513.785.3690.
